I recently sold my tonneau cover (Gatortrax MX) and now I want to replace it- Money is burning a hole in my pocket... lol. My first thought was going with a topper since my family and I go camping about half a dozen times during the summer. It would be nice to fit more things in the truck bed and take the dogs once in a while without having to take a second vehicle. I would get a dometic fridge sometime in the near future if I went this route. This would be the most expensive option (wallet would hate me for a while). If I went this route we would sleep in our ground tent until I could afford a RTT (12-18 months).

I have also been eyeballing the Diamondback SE cover (pretty much what I had before but would gain a foot in truck bed space) to protect my goodies. I liked having a couple storage bins under my previous cover to store tools and backup winter gear in case I got stranded in the mountains. Had an axe attached to the side rail which came in handy a few times last year when we ran out of firewood. If I went this route I would attach a couple Rotopax to the front bed rail as well (would do the same if I go the topper route) and stick with our ground tent. I’ve seen a couple people put kB voodoo bars on top of their DB cover but I wouldn’t like losing the ability of being able to open the panels on the cover.

And lastly, thinking of going with the CBI bed rack. I would lose the ability of storing bins in the bed but would be able to get a rack and a RTT for the same cost as a toppper. I would mount a couple Rotopax and axe/shovel in the bed or rack. Needless to say I am all over the place with what to put back there.

What do you have in the back of your truck? Are you happy with the route you took? What would you change if you could do it all over again? Have you changed your setup? Why? Any feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks TW :)

So I might be able to chime in.

Just took delivery with the 2019 tonneau cover.......tbh it is growing on me.

It is kind of nice! However I'll probably sell it in the next week or two as the wife and I have no need for it.

I will add actual content too, damn your good example!

Had a topper on my 08’ and it was a love hate relationship. Had to take my snowblower half apart to fit it a couple years ago. Had a couch that wouldn’t fit when we picked it up. It was awesome for road trips or camping but my 19’ won’t get a topper.

    So....only 100 miles on it

    Simply Works......

Depends on what you want to do with it.

    The tonneau cover is AWESOME.

It is very nice but, if someone wants an open bed for hauling things, I would remove it!

    But....the damn thing is tight....."WORKS"......

Yeah I had to do a dealer swap for an OR in Cement. Mine came with the factory tonneau, it’s not too bad and flips out of the way pretty easy. I’m content with it.

I keep a ton of expensive equipment/instrumentation in my bed most of the time and also use it for camping/off roading when not working. Best option for me was a Diamondback; secure and with the ability to carry hundreds of pounds on top of it, it’s like having a double deck bed.

Ha! Tell you what, I will post a 20 second video of me working my “magic” on a pole if you or anyone else on TW can get 50% of TW members to donate $20 each for the therapy sessions (mods) I’ll need for doing that! Deal?

I got my truck with the OEM bed cover, used it for over a year. I recently got a RTT and some bed bars..had them on for like a month and decided to go back to my bed cover and forgot how much I LOVE having a bed cover..just being able to see out the rear window is worth it.

One thing I didn't like about having my tent/bed bars on and bed cover off...is my storage bin with my recovery/emergency gear/tools was exposed along with my axe, shovel and rotopax. With my cover on I know that's all secure, to an extent (locking tailgate).

All that being said, I'll run my bed bars and tent during the summer when I'll be using it a lot but after that I'll for sure take it off and rock the tonneau cover.

I agree. I don't have one on the truck yet. But will. I had one on the sport trac for6 years. Nice thing about a folding cover is that they come off easy. You can always toss it to the side when you don't need it. Can't put it on when you do need it if you don't have one.

OP you mention dogs, main reason I put topper on the truck. They are protected and covered, only need one vehicle to camp. When wet and muddy, just have them jump in back. Traded in a 4runner for the truck and topper.
