just curious who changes oil and filter even if it is not in paid plan. I think many new Tacoma owners change it at 5,000. I know years ago the oil would come out way sooner, they called it "breaking in oil"
I understand I will have to pay for it at 5k but keeping the same oil and filter for 10k just does not sound good to me as a new owner.

Its your money, but it is not necessary to stray from the manufacturers recommendations. All will be fine. Its not 1955 anymore.

I do all my oil/filter changes - every 7500 miles and rotate tires every 5000. Dealer kept sending me notices that I was do - that stopped once the two year period was over. I too did not care for the every 10000 mile thing and I don't want the dealer messing with my truck - the only thing I took it to them for were TSB's and that was a royal PIA.

I changed mine at 5k. I enjoy it and it’s peace of mind.

I've been changing mine at 10K since new. That was almost 12 years and 194,000 miles ago. It still doesn't use any between changes. The guy with the 1.2 million mile Tacoma uses a 10K mile oil change. His factory engine lasted 880,000 miles and he is at 400,000 on the 2nd engine.

Yeah, another oil thread, yippie!!! LOL

My concern, as well, is only the first oil change at 10K miles. I bought a sports car last year and they were specific the car had to be returned to the dealer at 500 miles for the first oil change. Why Toyota goes 10K miles on the first change, not sure but seems very long. I may do the first one myself around 1K miles. After that, no problem doing oil changes at 10K-12K miles - done that on my old truck and still got very good oil reports.

I dumped the factory fill at 1500 miles and will go every 10k from there with a quality syn. 5 is fine if your running conventional but it’s a waste of money time and resources unless you’ve got a seriously severe usage cycle like you drive a 5min commute or you track it lol

I don't even think 0w-20 is available as a Conventional Oil.

It’s not...but Toyota allows for a thicker viscosity in the manual for certain circumstances.

I’d run any SN rated 0w20 out 10k and not worry if that was my chosen viscosity

I had the dealer change the original oil at 5k at my expense. Now, I am following the 10k recommendation.

Was it necessary to have the original oil changed at 5k ? Probably not. Did it make me feel better ? You bet.

I do it...the factory oil is full of assembly lube and silicon from the sealants. You can see it all on UOAs.

Not needed...but I feel better. Plus I don’t run a 20et and wanted it out of the sump.

I got my dealer to do mine free at 5,10,15 and then 20. The rest will be done at normal scheduled intervals.
I understand most say it's not needed but for me it's just peace of mind and got it free. I don't think there is any harm doing it more often than suggested, just have to be willing to pay for the oil.

Yeah I had the dealer change oil at my 5k service out of my own pocket - just too old school I guess. Will more than likely stick to the recommended change cycle of 10k from here.
