Dang dude. This is some awesome stuff! Thank you for sharing. Just got my hands on used AluCab. Excited to start getting it set up the way I want it. Lots of good ideas here!

 

Thanks... ohhhhh an Alu-Cab what????? They make so much great stuff... did you get a topper or an awning, fridge slide? What? Lol. Everything they seem to make is top notch.

 

An AluCab Explorer Canopy. The build quality is amazing. I’ll try to get some pics here when it gets light out. Got the black and white theme goingwith no chrome. With a little luck I should get the Expedition 3 Tent and their awning here soon. After this I’ll start setting up the interior with what I need. DIY draw system, fridge and a solar system to top it all off.

Awesome looking camper! But is this thread now open to all pop up wedge camper mods? Thought it was just for GFC.

 

Eh we’re all friends here. No biggie, I’ve yet to see a thread on TW or anywhere that doesn’t go off on a tangent now and again. Keeps things interesting.

I cleaned up my bs on this thread for you guys, to help streamline things. Hell I have no immediate plans to own a GFC, so
I have enjoyed the info I have pulled from you and Ace, so thanks for sharing your efforts and findings. I spend half of each month out of rig, so I can easily say I appreciate the knowledge people share regardless of the camper. But again that is for another thread.

 

I'm starting to look into lights. Thanks for the links! One question is why did you use the channel instead of just gluing to the bar? Double sided tape or something? It looks like this would give a nice framework to attach to the frame. Did you use the holes in the frame for attaching? Does it diffuse the light a lot?

I'm planning to work on my drawer system next weekend. Then, I'll have a nice logical place to put a switch board. I'll need to have a second one for access from the tent but right now I'm mostly concerned about getting some light into the bed.

Where did you tap for juice? I think I'm going to run directly from the battery for now - with plans to insert a small AGM battery in the future. I bought a nice disconnect switch so that I can isolate from the cranking battery when I do add the AGM house battery. I have a low voltage cut off for now so if the volts drop I don't kill my cranking battery. I'm also planning to have a quick disconnect plug so that I can take the drawers out easily if I need to haul wood or something.

When things get rolling I'll post up some pics.

 

PS: I could go into a long explanation about my 'plan' but there's already a bunch of great ideas on here. So, I figure I'll wait until I'm deep into it and just post pix. I'm borrowing a LOT from other folks ideas to make it what I want.

 

Ok. Thanks for the comments @ace7196 . I ordered a pile of stuff from Amazon. My plan is to run a couple of temp lights for now and continue to work on the grand scheme over the next couple of weeks. Cheers.

Anyone ditch the bedding foam for an air mattress so it can be deflated and all bedding stay up top?

 

wouldnt that counter the premise of the modular design? How would you access the tent area from the truck bed if there's an air mattress on top?

 

I’m not planning on climbing through the bed of my truck every time. I ordered mine with a side door, plus there’s the rear door.

I don’t know if the mattress can be removed from all the panels without destroying it though.

 

As @ace7196 said, the panels can easily be separated from the foam. Deflate the mattress, remove a panel to exit and leave your sleeping bag or whatever bedding you have in place, close the camper. I've already tried it and the real question is finding a mattress that gets the wife approval.

 

I understand your point there! So far I've tried 3 different brand air mattresses and they were all the "long" option for each brand. That seems to be 78" so there is a 12" area left without coverage. I'm short so it doesn't matter but that area makes it easy to remove one of the squares and exit without deflating the mattress.

 

I’m curious how the 2” mattress did in Baja. Haven’t seen anything since, but if it’s as comfortable as the 3”, I’d rather have the extra inch for leaving bedding up there
