Yeah I was just about to say I scored them on RockAuto for $40.79 a piece. Cheaper than OEM, cheaper than pretty much any other "performance" company peddling machined patterns like EBC, Stoptech, and so on.

The temptation was strong to get slotted or dimpled rotors but the price points were absurd for what is basically cosmetics. I think the Fast and the Furious craze has worn off on a lot of people and we've collectively realized blanks are where it's at. Thermal mass and pad friendly.
Aside from sprint racers that spend very little time on the brakes and need absolute maximum lightness, most winning racers have gone to blanks. Anymore you look at F1 brakes, LMP1 brakes, WRC brakes, and if you do see slots it's a minimal pattern.

Sweet! I just put 265/75r16 KO2s on my truck and noticed the brakes are getting taxed.

Seems I have a weird Tacoma. I have the TRD OR model, but I have the brake booster thing on the left side of the engine compartment. My brakes were crap with the stock sized tires.

Also noticed I dont think I have any of the hill start assist or downhill assist, Atrac or whatever features. I dont even have a traction control on/off button.

Ill be looking into brake upgrades, but dont wanna go crazy on something like a 6 piston stoptech kit. Anyone here done the W13 or whatever it is brake swap?

The brake swap I think you are referring to is for 1st gen only.

Yeah as @stumbles said you already have the calipers spoken of. 13WL is the stock Tacoma brake as of gen 2.

Sounds to me like you have an SR5 with an Offroad sticker though. Don't hold me to that as I really don't know as much about 2nd gen as I do 3rd.

The best bang for your buck is going to be good pads mated to good blank rotors. I went with Akebono Performance Ceramic but you might wanna look into an even more aggressive compound like Stoptech Sport or Hawk HPS.
Also don't neglect the drums- if they are getting old and weak kneed it's worth re-shoeing them.

That’s because they are all carbon fiber rotors. Can’t really slot them and they do not work for shit until they are HOT

Best Brake upgrade you can do is install stainless steel brake lines to get the moosh out of the pedal, and second change brakefluid every 2 years. I went with the EBC front rotors and their Green pads, huge improvement.

I did the same - removed my sway bar and increased firmness for city driving - can hardly tell the sway bar isn’t on there

Even series like WRC where they run iron rotors, you see a lot less slotting than you used to. Hell a bit of this slot pattern is just a branding opportunity:
Although to be fair WRC setups are crazy dependent on the given rally, and sometimes they do run a shitload of slots to beat the piss out of the pad to keep temps up during unpredictable heat cycles.

There's no reason not to switch to SS lines if your old lines are tired & worn but rubber lines (new rubber) aren't that much different, feel wise, from SS at the beginning of their lifetime. I always tell people who want to replace new lines to wait so they won't be disappointed. ;)

That reminds me though I should do my brake fluid soonish. Already have the diff fluid in the garage.
Debating when I should do the coolant. I know Toyota says the pink shit lasts basically forever and a day but that's partially so they don't get dinged on environmental scores over coolant service life.

Massive brake ducts + Long straight = cool brakes. End of long straight is a 90 degree turn onto dirt, you need heat in those pads FAST.

I recall reading an article about experimenting with different rotor types with a live IR readout on pad/rotor temp, and more aggressively slotted and drilled rotors would heat pads faster.

So I figured that's what's going on. Trying to get those temps up higher, faster. Not like you need to worry about the longevity of the pad or the rotor all that much.

It’s also not a rally car with brake ducts that are large enough to swallow birds and small woodland creatures...;)

Also doesn’t the 5VZ make basically the same power? :D

Brakes only slow you down. Rally drivers don’t even use them. They just bang downshifts and throw the bitch sideways.

Lateral backflip to half roll out and bang it to third for a quick exit is how it goes. I don't think there is a more dangerous sport than rally cause damn they use anything and pray they make it.

You should read about Group B. So many people died, spectators and drivers alike.

I did some amateur rallyx and hillclimbs when I had my GTI and access to a different WRX, lots of unsanctioned "practice" too. Didn't have enough balls to be any good. Never placed very well but it was still fun to be sure.

There's nothing quite like flicking the car sideways towards corner exit and then stomping the gas and applying a bit of opposite lock to slide your way along the line and out of the corner.
Then again there's also nothing quite like going off course and that butt puckering moment of avoiding bushes, rocks, and trees and praying your oil pan doesn't catch anything unseen.:mudding:
