FWIW, the only "good/bad" oil experience I had was with my '60 Morris Mini. If I put Valvoline Racing Oil in it, the diff output shaft seals would leak badly. When I would run Castol GTX, the leaks would stop. Castrol for life!

Fun fact, the transmission of the original Mini did double duty as the oil pan.

I buy what's on sale at Wally World. Never use house brands though.
We have an 08 Highlander with 178k. Only thing we have done is a water pump at 80k and the alternator at 160k. Oil is oil as long as it is at spec.
BTW alternator sits under motor and requires moving a mount to access. Had the dealer do it and it was about 1300. Never again.

Wonder if that's the case on the 3.5 in the taco.

    You can always use wd-40:

Oil threads are like samsung vs.iphones debate. Both does the same thing. I would not hesitate running this oil vs Mobil 1. Please show me proof on known engine issues from running generic brand synthetic oil vs more expensive ones like mobil 1. But what do I know about synthetic oils, I only run conventional oil on all my vehicles.

Brand doesn't matter get what's on sale. No vehicle ever blew up because of the brand of oil. Close thread

    I don't use Quakerstate.

    1. Good friend used it and upon engine tear down found sludgy oil in the main bearings.
    2. Another friend was servicing one of the warehouse trucks (who used it exclusively) and found a significant amount of sludge built up on the underside of the valve covers to the point of effecting the rocker arm movement.
    3. One of my professors worked in a GM Test lab and said "Don't use Quakerstate!" after telling us that most oils are fine.

I've never had a personal reason to not use Quakerstate, but I don't for the reasons above.

I buy Mobil 1 because I'm a Chevy guy and GM is fond of it in their performance cars. I figure it must be decent stuff. Mobil is a big company and likely follows industry standards. It's just an "easy to be convinced this is good" decision.

I probably wouldn't sweat other oils besides Quakerstate.

Oh, I probably wouldn't really sweat the Amazon oil or even Walmart oil if the bottle says it matches what I'm supposed to be using.

Ok how about this, any engine can go 100k miles in the first year if properly assembled.
But a much smaller percentage can go 10-20years without any issues. Why is that if they all have the same specs, say like 280 HP and 265 Ft torque?

Could we then agree that it's all in the putting and the reason we are very selective on the brand we choose?
