I’ve been enjoying this thread for some time now. I’ve only gotten to page 36. I’d like to read the whole thread before I ask any questions, but I can’t resist.

Explanation: The manual says that if you are towing more than 3000 pounds, it is recommended that the trailer be equipped with two or more axles. I’ve seen a lot of what I would call huge loads being pulled by these little Tacos on this thread.

Question: What does this thing tow like with say 4000 pounds on a single axle with a brake controller, sway control and weight distribution hitch?

The tow vehicle is a 2017 DCLB 4x4

Well, with a car on a trailer, I didn't feel much at all. Drove limit, though.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I think that you're thinking it means that the truck should be a dually? What the manual is saying is that the trailer it's self needs to have two or more axles, not the truck that's pulling it. I believe the highest single axle trailer is rated for 3k to 3.5k lbs., so to haul 4000 lbs with a single axle trailer, you would be overloading the trailer (not that you couldn't do it). I imagine it would pull that just fine as the truck won't know if the trailer has only one axle instead of two.
As an FYI, because of the low weight rating on single axle trailers, almost none of the single axle trailers have brakes on them, so even if you have a brake controller, it won't do you any good.

I appreciate your response. To clarify, I was referring to the trailer having a single axle vs. two.

The trailer I’m considering weighs about 2800 dry. It has a single axle (with brakes). So , I think it’s safe to assume that after loading it up, the total weight will be over 3000. It’s a recommendation of Toyota (not a requirement) that when towing over 3k the trailer have more than 1 axle.

Also, the GVWR on the truck is 5600. I can see the weight of occupants being around 400 and tongue weight around 300. The truck weights about 4500. So I’m at 5200 withought any cargo. If I add 450 for dirt bikes and another 150 for cargo, I’m at 5800.

You think I got the wrong truck, or will this thing handle it.

To answer your question, yes, you'll be completely fine. The more weight you have in the truck will actually help with towing because it'll make it feel like you have a heavier/bigger tow vehicle (as long as you don't go too extreme with the weight).

If you have any pictures of the trailer, I'd be interested in seeing that. I've never seen a single axle trailer that weights that much empty. I don't doubt they exist, I just haven't seen one before and am always interested in seeing/learning new things.

What you’re saying makes sense, but then what’s the point of the GVWR? As I understand it, this is the truck+occupants+cargo+tongue weight

Ahh, I'm not a camper person, so I forgot those even exist; that makes complete sense now!

As for the GVWR, yes, you are correct on that and if your estimated weights are correct, you will in fact be 200 lb. over the trucks max GVWR. Some people think you can't go over that limit or you will die and other people know that you can go over that limit (especially by only 200 lb.) and be perfectly fine. You'd only be 3.57% over the limit of the truck and it will not notice that 200 lb. difference.

I have towed just about anything and everything (other than campers) with this truck and many other trucks and that won't be an issue. I do NOT recommend doing what I did in this picture, but here's mine pulling 12,000 lbs (1,200 lb tongue weight plus about 180 lb driver and 100 lb of cargo in the truck). It took a little time to get to speed, but it pulled it just fine. The biggest thing is making sure you have the weight properly distributed. A 4k lb load can be more dangerous than this load if it's not distributed properly.

Thanks. Yeah, I’ve seen (on this thread) some pretty serious pulls!

It depends on what I am towing. Best to measure for your application: https://www.etrailer.com/faq-ballmount.aspx#measure

Just curious if you’ve towed much before and if so, what was your previous tow vehicle? I haven’t towed much with this truck as it’s not it’s main purpose for me. It tows like most naturally aspirated gas motors (non ecoboost). It revs to 4000 on most mountain passes, sometimes dropping to second on steep passes at 5000 plus. I found using ect and sport mode to better limit the top gear worked best for me, otherwise the truck would try to upshift too early. It did fine towing this load but only was around 12mpg. Not too bad really. What I’m trying to get at, is towing well can be in the eyes of the driver.
Here’s what the Tacoma towed and also what I tow with my big truck.
And for the big load, the v10 gets it done but not near as well as the Powerstroke did.

From where I’m sitting, that Ford to trailer ratio looks way more appropriate than some of the photos I’ve seen on this thread of Tacos pulling similar or even bigger loads. It’s fun to see what these Tacos can do, I just prefer not to push the limits.

I’ve been running a progression of ECU/TCU tunes for about a year now from OVTune. Each version has helped me enjoy my truck more and more... even when towing. The truck holds gears way better and gets gets better gas millahe (more so when not towing)

My previous truck was an F350. It was a monster. I’m realistic about my expectations of the Taco...

I’m not too concerned, but if I was honest about it, I’d say my preference would be to stay within Toyota’s recommendations and requirements.

It looks like I’m going to be 200-500 lbs over GVWR. That’s not very much though... I’d like to refine this estimye to know what the real number is. I’m going to see if I can use the scale at the dump to find out what me true loaded tongue weight is.

I don’t think that a weight distribution hitch increases GVWR, but I think products like Sumo Springs do. Anybody have any more insight on this?

For those of you running Sumo Springs: which ones did you go with and why? My truck is completely stock other than the tune and a 40 pound canvas topper (Can-Back)

You can tow double trailer without a fifth wheel? Which state are you in?

Yes. In Idaho. Legal in Utah as well. I don’t travel over 75 miles usually with that setup and usually at 55 mph or less with a few miles at 65.
If I were going farther I’d take the side by side or the kids 4 wheelers.

2 inch drop is the most common one I use, but they sell them at uhaul so you can see what you need and then buy there. 2 inch drop should work though.

Also if I remember correctly, uhaul is standardized on 2" ball size.

yeah, i was just wondering if there is a better mount to buy on Amazon then at uhaul. A regular 2 drop 2ball would cost me about 14 bucks on amazon. Is there any issues getting a cheapy?
