If you want a serious mud toy I would reccomend getting a quad or something of that nature. Using a daily driver as a mud toy is a bad idea as mud kicks the crap out of most vehicles. If you want something to sink in the mud pit, get a quad.

 

Going to add another thing besides 4x4 vs 2wd.


OP stay away from 05-06 due to possible headgasket issues.

Exactly, buy the truck, ramp, ratchet straps and a quad with some silverback mud tires mounted on it. Beat the shit out of the quad all day, take it home and still have a daily to get back and forth in.

 

I’ve been looking at a can am renegade 1000 for myself. Would love one of these for the snow trails of Colorado. Wife likes to drive the yxz. The 450r isn’t that much fun on snow and ice.

I take mine through mud pretty regular. and yes anything with a boot or grease in it doesn't last long once mud gets inside of it.

but that's the price you have to pay to play. i'm fine with replacing ball joints, axles, tie rods, and wheel bearings when they need it.

Yes Op you need a 4x4 your not going to get very far in the mud with a 2x4

 

My 1st off roading was with a 1969 Pontiac Firebird. Only thing I owned and I was going hunting regardless. It was limited, but I took it places you'd be shocked to see.

 

Bottom line OP you said 4x4 isnt in the budget so regardless these answers are irrelevent. Your going to take it out regardless but you will be limited if its mudding your after.

 

I wouldnt offroad in a 2wd, you could get stuck in wet grass off the side of the road so I'm sure you'll be unhappy if you hit any muddy trails.

 

From what Ive gotten out of all these opinions, It is possible, it's just not ideal. The majority of people are saying no, you shouldn't. Then there are other mentioning how they do it on the regular. So it is possible, you just need to know how to drive while mudding, expect to get stuck, know your limits and don't work it too hard. It is my first truck/vehicle and it's mainly going to be used for transport, not so much intense expert level off roading. I figure from what Ive seen here the occasional mudding would be fine and saying that yes I am aware of the risks.

Good job on doing your research here. Something else to consider. You don't need a $10K+ 2nd gen Taco to go out wheeling. I have a very well built Ford F150 that I take out and beat the snot out of. It's beat, rusty, ugly, and I don't care if I dent it or get it dirty. It has a 460 big block and Boggers. Something that extreme may not be in the cards for you, but looking for an older 4WD should be more of a consideration for you than a newer 2WD.

 

This is the best advice so far. For the same money as a 2wd Tacoma you could find an older full size domestic 4x4 that someone has already modified.

 

I went to a friends place on the back 40, last Saturday Night.

It rained and I was parked up on the grass behind the shop.
Sure nuff. I went to leave and spun the tires on the wet grass.
Rather than tear up the yard, I asked him to pull me out with his Duramax 4x4.
Chained up and 5 feet away I was back in drive.
Now the muddy driveway and dirt road were an adventure!
