2018 Tacoma TRD Off Road manual
Purchased an 18 Tacoma trd Off Road with a manual trans. A few months back and have to say I am extremely disappointed with Toyota in regards to their handling of the drivability issues with the Gen 3. Been back to the dealer on multiple occasions for the 3.5L engine surge issue and have not gotten anywhere. In defense of the dealer they acknowledge there is a design issue with this engine, but there are no engine codes, so there's little they can do about it. To make matters worse, these trucks aren't holding their value like the Gen 2, so I'm stuck with it for who knows how long. Wish I had never traded my 15, worst decision ever. How are they able to sell such a poorly running vehicle with no repercussions? I test drove a brand new auto and it ran just as bad, I am surprised there aren't more complaints about this

I have a 2018 automatic and have no complaints at all. Sure it does shift a little early, but I have a button to take care of that issue. I got rid of a mid size truck with a 4.7L V8 to get this Tacoma, and I have no regrets about that.

A lot better shifting then my gen2. Gen2 took way too long to shift.

I have a ‘17 auto. I’ve loved every one of the 30k miles I’ve driven it so far. No drivability issues to speak of.

Then sell it/trade it and buy something else. That simple.

If you're not happy with it, get rid of it. End of story. I did it, as did many others. Do what makes you happy; complaining about things you can't change won't help.

You know it's funny, I have talked to a whole bunch of actual Gen3 Tacoma owners in person and not a single person, NOT ONE, complained about ANYTHING. It seems like all the complaints about the Tacoma are on this forum.

Sounds like a test drive wasn't performed prior to purchase. Or trolling.........

Well mine has what feels like an engine skip every time you try to accelerate under load, like when climbing a grade. Unfortunately there isn't much flat ground where I live, so I live with it every day. It also is getting terrible gas mileage, best I've seen is 16 mpg but now that its winter its more like 13. The 4.0L in my old truck consistently got 17-19 mpg on the same routes. It also had a ton more power than this 3.5L despite having less hp on paper

I'm going to disagree with you on this.

The 4.0L has a ton more power? I drive a second gen regularly for work and it's just as slow as my 3rd gen. Auto transmission isn't great on the second gen, and it's equally as goofy in the 3rd gen.

Yes it was, but didn't realize I needed to look for a problem on a brand new vehicle. This type of issue isn't evident on a quick test drive. I like everything else about the truck, I just wish they could get it to run right

I love my 3rd MT WAY more then my 2nd gen MT I traded in. But I’m also running OVtune 1.05 :burnrubber:. Finally drives as it should have from the factory.

Not holding the value? Calling bs on that. I can see on kbb they are holding value.

I can’t see a dealership telling you there is a design flaw with the engine either lol.

Went from a 2015 Silverado LTZ 4x4 with the 5.3L V8. Does the Taco have the same power? Of course not, but do I think it’s underpowred and drives like shit? Nope.

When you test drove the truck did you notice any of these problems? I never have noticed any isues with my 17 in regards to surging, the transmission i have had some 'weird' items occasionally but have also had similar things with other brands.

I have a 19 with MT. No problems at all with it so far. Runs great.

Also the 3.5 likes to be reved higher. Makes its power higher in the rpm range.

Take a look at OVTune. Lots have done it and love the way their truck runs after it.
