    I suspect some forums invent colorful characters to keep the forum lively. I used to frequent a motorcycle forum where I am all but certain that this was done. Also there are people who get very active on a forum and they create alt ego characters to shitpost.

    I had an online Religious Studies course. We had an assignment where we had to find a religious forum and interview forum members about their religion. I found a Jewish forum. Created two User IDs and just talked back and forth to myself. Cause...I did not want to talk to, you know, actual religious people about icky religious stuff.
