Wrong, 3 gens hold the value as good as 2nd gens. The problem with new vehicles is that they will loose more value the first two years.

We like low end torque in trucks to do work. That's why a lot of us got a truck.

What's the reason for the power of the 3rd gen being up high?

THERE IS A TSB for the engine surge. Not sure if it applies to Manuals or the 18s or 19's. It took care of the engine surges on my 17. It is connected to the steering mechanism input to the ECU when in drive or reverse only. Easy to duplicate with a auto trans. not sure about a manual

Does anyone know for sure if the '19's have more responsive engine and transmission performance? And/or a smoother ride? A '17 V6 I rented had really lethargic engine performance and required the gas pedal to be pushed down almost half way to the floor to maintain freeway speeds - as though the ignition timing and spark advance curves were too retarded.

I also rented an '18 Camry with the same exact 2GR-FKS V6 and that engine was night and day more powerful and responsive and a pleasure to drive. So I'm wondering if the '19 2GR-FKS Tacoma V6's now behave more like powerful '18 and '19 Camry V6's?

Too bad the OP is having bad experiences which is unfortunate. Hopefully it gets updated and working correctly

I signed on here a while ago gathering information before making buying a new truck. Some of the negative stuff almost made me go a different direction, but I went and bought a new Tacoma and so far I really like the truck. I realized more people that comment are more prone to complain --- so far glad I made the Tacoma purchase.

No we're not fanboys, but this is an enthusiasts forum, meaning 'most' of us test drive and research vehicles before buying them. Not blindly buying and later joining a forum to bitch about how you regret your purchase.

Honestly I don’t even know. Almost every automaker has realized low end power results in a better driving experience and customer satisfaction. Having the power band at low rpm is more important than having more power at mid and high rpm. People just do not like to rev up their engines, regardless of whether it is a truck, SUV, or sedan. But in order to achieve peak power at low RPM many factors have to be considered and perhaps Toyota should have when they redesigned the power train but they didn’t.

This is also easier to do in smaller turbocharged engines, which will produce comparable power to our NA 3.5 but due to their lower inertia and higher efficiency in taking in air, will do so at lower rpm.

FWIW I had 6 Tacoma's over the last 20 years. Absolutely loved every one of them. Last July I bought a 2018 and traded it after 2 months because I hated it. Worst transmission/shifting of any vehicle I'd ever driven, it "felt" underpowered on the interstate, and it had a bad diff howl.

As soon as (or if) Toyota addresses these issues I'll get another one. Until then, I'll drive something else.

I'm not disagreeing with you that trucks need low end grunt. They do. Toyota in their infinite wisdom decided the Tacoma would be different. It's not wrong or bad but DIFFERENT. If that does not work well for you then the Tacoma is not the right vehicle for you. It's that simple.

I have a 17’ and love it. Zero complaints. It’s definitely different but I’ve owned it for two years and don’t regret it one bit. I’ve taken it on multiple trips and it does just fine. I live in a very mountain covered area with lots of hills and it does just amazing. I get it at 3K RPMs and it goes over steep passes without any issues whatsoever. The Camry weights about 1500 lbs less so you’re going to get more response and movement from it. If you’re a truck guy, it shouldn’t bother you that much. A truck is not going to drive like a small car, it’s not a race car. It’s a truck. Sounds like you’re better off in a small car and not a truck is you like faster 0-60 times and more comfortable rides.
