I bought my 2004 just before the 2nd gens were released and remember thinking the new design looked pretty cool. Then I promptly forgot about them and loved my 04 until I reluctantly sold it and bought the 16. But then I wasn't spending any time on TW having pissing matches about this stupid shit

Did the value drop some with the 3rd gen wheels?

Some of the same reasons why I just bought a 2015 when I could have bought a 2019. If anyone thinks the 3rd Gen isn't having real issues with the engine and transmission, (which is knocking down the reliability rating), you are only fooling yourself. Toyota had to f**k up a good thing in an attempt to get better gas mileage and compete with the competition by adding new gadgets and electronics. The used market makes it clear that the 3rd Gen is having problems when the 2015 models are only $500 less on average, than the 2016 models.

I have driven several 3rd gens with the 3.5 v6 and have a 2nd gen 4.0. I have to say, the power increase is amazing with the newer motors. I guess only time will tell if they last as long. But, I absolutely hate all the newer electronics. And the cab is definitely smaller. I test drove a 3rd gen before I bought my 08 and I could barely fit (6'3"). The second gen has more room imo.

@Tehkoema …...Really?? "Did the 3rd gen ever tempt you" ......….YES, I traded a 2015 TRD OR 2wd with 37,000 miles for a brand new 2017 TRD OR 2wd and it was the worst mistake EVER!.....yes, the interior felt nicer but the engine and tranny combo sucked....BAD!....no low end power, constant shifting, same MPG as my 2015.....after 6 months I couldn't stand driving it anymore......sold it back to the dealer and lost a few thousand $$$.....found my current 2015 TRD PRO and I couldn't be happier!....will I trade it for the current "turd" gen?.....not a chance in hell!....the grass is not always greener!!…..Toyota F*cked up with the new motor/tranny combo.....they could have easily added a control knob like my 2015 RC F (Yes it's bitchin and 467 hp kicks butt and takes names!) has that alters the power and shifts points from eco mode to normal mode to sport mode to sport + mode.....shouldn't be that hard to do!

My 2012 was bought with cash, has 46k on the clock, so no need to consider a new one.
'14 F'n'J has only 16k on it, so no new purchases for a long while.

2013 TRD sport with 130,000 miles. No issues with it at all. Did all the belts, hoses, thermostat and water pump at 100,000 just to be safe. The only thing I don't like is the crappy paint they used. Thing gets scratched just by looking at it. Will keep it at least a few more years. I was thinking of getting another one when I retire. That hopefully will be my forever truck. Not sure if I will get low mileage 2nd gen or new.

The front end on the 2nd gens (2012-2015) looks way better. A lot of the exterior features on the 3rd gens look like after thoughts and the interior looks like it was designed by 15 different people, each one not knowing what the other one was doing.

I won't be looking at buying another Tacoma until another complete redesign, which may look even worse :(

and you can't debadge the tailgate either

My 2ng is a RC, there is no 3rg counterpart. I've got a 18 Legacy, that's mostly made of plastic, and paper. I've received a few recall notices, and that has the unnecessary safety bells and whistles.

I have a good truck to drive, and something that feels like driving a 3rg.

I'm keeping the RC till the frame bends in half.

Just for clarification...not playing TW police. But the 2nd gens have the 1GR 4.0 L engine. 3rd gens have a DI version of the 2GR 3.5 L mill.

The 2GR has more HP higher up in the RPM.

The 1GR has a bit more torque down low. That's because the 1GR has 500cc more displacement and a longer stroke

I have 30k on my paid for 2013 TRD OR and I love the truck. I had it a few years bone stock and it was ok, but now I have spent some time on it and made it mine and I like it even more. 3rd gens are not for me do not care for the styling, drive train, or direction they are headed with TRD PrOSER models. Have a couple friends with 3rd gens and I am not impressed with them and they have made comments about getting 2nd gens to replace theirs.

I love the look of the older Tacoma's honestly I wound not buy a new one in my option, and in talking to tech's and mechanics the older ones are the better ones

Thanks for correcting me. I knew there was an "older" 1gr model and a newer one. I really thought the newer one was put in the 3rd gens but guess my years were off. Thanks for clearing that up

How did the water pump look (bearings/fins) after you replaced it? How's your alternator output at that many miles in MA?

Doesn't matter, I dont play let's keep up with the jones' and I dont need the most up to date everyrhing.

Also even if mine got totaled I'd buy another 2nd gen. I dont like the front end and I hate the motor for the 3rd gen as a truck application.

There were 2 different 1GRs. The one found in the 2nd gen Taco as well as 1st gen Tundras, 4th gen 4Runners and the original FJ Cruiser. That had a single VVT-i valve train.

A bit later the dual VVT-i 1GR was introduced. It saw duty in later FJs, 5th gen 4Runners and was the orginal base engine on the 2nd gen Tundra. But never the Taco
