Excuse my ignorance here so when you rest your cheek upon shoulder / buttstock the appraised guided line helps you sight in?

 

It’s for comfort/repeatability.
Scopes have parallax under a certain distance (typically 100 yards for centerfire scopes, 50 yards for rim fire) which essentially means that under 100 yards (or 50, depending on the scope) if your eye isn’t perfectly centered in the scope the point of aim will change slightly.

 

It's mainly a comfort thing for me, I find that an adjustable comb let's me sit behind the rifle for a long time quite comfortably because I'm actually letting the rifle help me support myself when prone as opposed to pure muscle control.

Lines your eye behind the scope instead of trying to hold your head up. We used to use rags and duct tape down range on our M14s. Much better and reliable solution when you have access to a good stock or factory made check riser.

 

Doing that tape and foam build up on my Axis stock convinced me to buy a chassis for it, lol.

 

Yeah I would never use tape with my Tikka. I bought a voodoo tactical one. The days before these def made for some ugly diy options.

I have that exact pad, and didn't like it. The velcro was always catching my clothes. I went from voodoo, to tape+foam, to chassis. Probably going to go to a stock soon with adjustable comb just to get away from a straight aluminum chassis. It's too cold when it's cold lol.

I’ve been on bed rest since Tuesday... so I’ve been all over the net and eBay looking for deals. Was bidding on several Agency Arms barrels for my G17. Always get outbid at the last second, literally. I did buy two Chinese copy’s of Taran Tacticals base pads from eBay, just for the hell of it because they were like $13 with a new spring. We’ll see what gives when they come in.
