Okay... so more personal diagnostics on this one.

Turning has no bearing on the sound and I have figured out how to make it happen 100% of the time.

Accelerate forward, brake, pop. Accelerate backwards, brake, pop. But only once in either direction until the direction is changed. The best way to explain it is as it something's shifting into place and vice versa... but only when the entire weight of the truck shifts and only that one time until the direction is changed.

    Hm...

btw - my truck is manual so the clutch is disengaged when all this is happening. My guess is it's something to do with a suspension component.

What you are hearing is the brake pads change position on their pins. Its normal.

I agree with Chris for benk0. Sounds like the normal brake pad click. Mine is a definite metallic pop. Took the driver side tire off and inspected things and tightened up bolts. Still does it. So frustrating.

I have the brake pad click for sure... this is new as of last week and MUCH louder. You can also feel it a little in the steering wheel. I'm going to try and shift the suspension w/o the brakes today to make sure it's not the brakes. I'm pretty sure it's happened w/o braking.

I got underneath the truck and checked everything out. Everything seems tight based on my limited set of tools and skills.

One of my sway bar endlinks bushing/seals is torn and a little grease has come out, but Will @ Sierra looked at it and thought it was fine.

    Maybe that's the culprit?

Chris... looks like I might be taking you up on your offer to at least hear the sound and give me your input. Oddly, it seems like as we hit 110+ out here it gets louder and happens 100% of the time. It's 90 now and isn't happening every time nor doesn't seem to be that loud.

I get the same thing but, it sounds like its coming from the front drivers strut, almost a clicking/poping noise that happens twice only when im backing up and only when im turning the wheel all the way to the left while backing up... any thoughts?

More investigation done today @ Sierra Expeditions. Those guys are awesome, btw.

It LOOKS like it could be the lower A-arm bushings? There seems to be a lot of play in them.

I'm going to exercise my option to have the dealership diagnose it. They usually don't charge anything unless I decide to pull the trigger on the repair. Monday it goes in. More to follow afterwards.

I have the same problem and can reproduce it in exactly the way described. I have a stock 4x4 auto. Hopefully you can reproduce it at the dealership. It seems way too loud to be coming from the brakes.

    Update :

Just before the weekend, I stopped by Sierra Expeditions where they took a look at the truck. Everything "looked" okay, but their thoughts were that my LCA bushings were shot. Quite honestly, the truck hasn't seen enough action at 40K IMO to have ALL the bushings go out. Keeping that idea on the backburner for now. BTW - Sierra is awesome and are super helpful. I just gotta be 100% before I pull the trigger on a full-on suspension overhaul.

The truck went to the dealership today. I reproduced the noise for the service adviser who noted it and I left for the day in a rental. Got a call from the adviser saying, of course, it's the brake pads. I disputed it but got him to guarantee that if I had them do a brake job, it would take care of the noise.

Again, of course, I get a call within 20 minutes. Now, the story is that my aftermarket suspension is causing the noise (Bilstein 5100 set at 1.75 and OEM springs). The adviser begins talking in circles about brake pad noise and aftermarket suspension and so on. I tell him not to bother washing it and I'll be back up there in 30 minutes to pick it up.

    Hm... the mystery continues.

    And now the mystery ends.

Went to Desert Rat, Tempe (more on that at the end) and had them take a look at it. Same as before, drove the truck for the techs, reproduced the popping/clunking sound and let them look.

Took about 10 minutes when I was told that my driver's side lower control arm was moving a pretty good amount. Another 10 minutes to figure out that the rear driver's side control arm bolt needed to be torqued down and I was done. Which goes to verify that Sierra Expedition's suggestion about bushings was somewhat correct. Will and the crew saw the play in the control arm.

Total cost at Desert Rat : $0.00. They didn't charge me. Albeit, I did buy my 5100's from them, but still. 30 minutes under the truck in 115 degree heat and solving a problem that has been on-going for almost a month now? Awesome.

I will update if the noise comes back, but on the drive home, and some back and forth on my street tells me it's gone.

That, I did not ask. Honestly, I think they just cranked them down by hand. I didn't hear any air tools running in the back.
