Leaky shock. What now?

When the soft bushing compresses, it'd have a place for the fitting to go....that wouldn't be right into the metal bucket which is the direct cause of the leak...due to what sounds like not listening to written instructions from Icon.

 

That's a huge bummer. I check mine periodically after realizing I was supposed to notch for these. I bet they'll deny warranty no matter what.

Can you get them fixed/rebuilt? You could always go kings and sell the rebuilt...

I'd love to go to kings too, but it's a lot of money to throw down for a change. But you definitely have my vote

Not helpful. I'm not looking to cry foul to Icon. Hence why I asked in the original post can these be fixed not that i blame this on Icon. And agian There is Zero contact occurring. No wear on the shock or the mount. None.

 

@Sub_Par I have my Fox's clocked too. That torque spec is a little concerning. Haha. Seen pics of that stud snapping, but at the same time I also have had it rotate in.


The instructions for those should be install shocked with sitting at "x" degrees rotated out, and then clamp the resi to be parallel with the frame to avoid contact. Was a pain to do with one set of hands and the tires on

You can have the fitting replaced and it can be rebuilt. It's not as serious as it looks. I understand it is inconvenient though. Maybe someone has some local stock shocks you could borrow and pull a leaf for the time being while they're rebuilt ?

 

Yea I did the install twice since they were on my 2012, wasn’t any easier the second time haha.

 

Can you actually prevent it from rotating? I've always been curious how much movement is allowed in the system and whether it's good or bad. I know one of my fronts is pretty free moving.

 

Problem is the same thing that'd keep it from rotating potentially adds more stress to the stud. Haha. I just keep an eye on it and give it a good tug every 4-6 months.

With that being said, I visually insepct my truck every morning. And at the end of the day I reinspect for fluids. regarding off road adventure

 

Thanks, I wish I had the 5100s i took off, but they were both leaking at 40,000 miles so I tossed them.

I'd look in your local regional thread. Someone might be a letter to hook you up. You just need the rears anyways. By pulling a leaf it should get you close to stock height and you can just spin the front CO down to get you by

It’s the fitting dude.

Option 1. Call icon for new hoses/fittings.

Option 2. Find a hydraulic hose house in town and take the hoses to them. They can easily make new ones and provide JIC fittings.

 

I was wondering about this. We have some good hydraulic shops in town as we are a big mining town. How do i go about recharging the shock if I get the fitting replaced?

 

A respected bicycle shop should be able to rebuild it for you.

Yes, sometimes a notch is the answer. Improper installation causes problems all of the time.

I have King 2.5 shocks on my truck and had to notch the shock mount slightly. The product is bolt-on, it bolts on just like a stock shock does. But the stock shock doesn't have a hose and fitting coming out of the top. Not all frames are exactly the same and the rubber bushing will compress. If someone is not comfortable with the idea that installing components on their truck makes them liable to ensure that it is done properly than they shouldn't do it themselves. There's a reason instructions frequently state that you need adequate mechanical knowledge/experience; it is impossible for installation instructions to cover every single possible issue. OP, if you haven't cleaned the area up how do you know that there has been contact between the fitting and the frame?
