Except on sandhills, bogs, or deep mud, when the tire spinning power of the 6 is necessary. Don't get me wrong, I liked my 4cyl more, but off road it gives up a lot to the V6, especially where I live. Crawling and trails are the only time I find the 4 cyl to be comparable capability-wise.

The 2.7 does what I need it to do. More power is always welcome, but I love the 4cyl. Hell it has more displacement than some sixes. It's a solid engine for sure.

    Had a 4 Banger Corolla. Pops has a 4 Banger Mazda B2200.

I have no problems with either. They get you where you need to go. But fully loaded having the V6 is nice. Especially with a truck, you load it up and we'll see who gets better mileage.

And being able to move a little more quickly if necessary is really nice. This is most apparent on my 200km work commute when I have to pass slow ass vehicles on a one lane highway.

My 2010 Tacoma Access is the 4th Toyota 4 cylinder I have owned. My weekend car is a 350hp AWD Celica Alltrac (2.0l 3S-GTE @ 17psi). I was not disappointed at all with the 2.7. Feels right on par if not a little quicker than my wifes 2009 Yaris. For a daily driver and general home project/car part hauling it does just fine. Addmittedly with max AC it does seem to get a bit sluggish, far from intolerable though. I would never consider using it to tow my alltrac somewhere though or for off road work. Nice comfy econo utility truck for daily driving IMO.

It has an A340E with minor updates through the years. The 4 cyl wakes up when the trans. works the way it should. So far the factory trans is in need of desperate renewal and Toyota needs to forget about its limp shifting automatics and get in favor of firm shifting long lasting transmissions.

If any of you have an automatic and are good with taking things apart an building things up make yourself a shift kit and see how much better the automatic wakes up and improves your performance.

Read through the link you will be surprised.

I love my 2.7. i do wish they made a 4l regular cab cause id buy it...

the 2.7 does everything i want. Im in the process of moving up to big bear up in the mountains and its been hauling all my stuff just fine and its a crazy drive up to big bear.

some mentioned weight in the begining of the thread but that has little effect. The AC v6 is only 100lbs heavier...

Oh and the 4banger tacomas have a higher payload capacity rating than a v6 according to toyota

This past two weeks my 2.7 2WD access cab has continued to impress me even more. I took a load of concrete to the dump and had no issues at all. The load weighed 1700 pounds. I also picked up two loads of 20 60lb bags of moter mix with no issues.

I like that I get 22mpg on my daily commute to and from work with the power to merge on to the freeways at 60mph.

The 2.7L Tacoma is a nice package that has a lot of style and power at a reasonable cost.

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
I have an 09 4x4 with the four banger. No complaints. Is it a neck-snapping 0 to 60 hot rod? No...and it's not meant to be.

I use mine as a work rig, lots of rough logging roads, off road, and steep ground. It hauls all the stuff I need for a day's work and does it without breaking a sweat. I load the hell out of it and usually bring home a little firewood at the end of the day along with all the other stuff that accumulates in the bed.

I used a have an F250 and the Taco 4 banger does the same job at about half the price for operating expenses. I'm not sorry I made the switch.

I can't see where the additional cost of buying and running of the 6 would make things any better than they are now.

I have the double cab and there is no way a 4 banger would do the job for that truck.

If you missed the other thread I started, Toyota is making a Double Cab non-Prerunner truck beginning in 2011. Both this and some Double Cab Prerunners will have the 4 banger 2.7L engine.

How will the 2.7L engine handle 5 adults and some cargo? Figure 1000-1100 pounds.

Every double cab using the 2.7L engine shows 19/25 MPG, a big plus in my book.

Any reason why I shouldn't jump on this?

I don't see why not. The only time that I have ever wanted more power was going up a mountain road in WV with ~1000 lbs of weight including 7 kayaks on the racks. Unless you are someone who does a lot of serious offroading (mudding, etc) or like to tear down the highway there really isn't a need for the larger engine.

Basically just go take a test drive. If you have to bring some buddies to weigh it down. Actually definately do that so you can make them do the rear spring TSB while you are there.

I bought the 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive more out of financial reasons than anything else. I would love a new V6 4 wheeler.. That being said. The only thing I do not like about my truck is when you are in cruise control at highway speed and you go up an incline the engine really hammers down for a few seconds to maintain speed. Maybe it would do better without the AC on. What I do now if I remember is turn the cruise off and throttle it myself. Other than that the 4 cylinder has all the power I need.

I am in my 4th Toyota 4 cylinder.

As a daily driver, using the bed to tote plywood, mulch and firewood on the weekends it does just fine. 159 horsepower is good and the truck is "quick".

My '06 AT 2WD, which I just traded, would get 30 - 31 mpg in highway locked in at 60 mph. The automatic was rated higher mpg than the manual.

I just purchased a '10 SR5 AC with AT .... we'll see what that gets.

It depends on what you want.

^ that's why i dislike cruise control. It's fine on flat roads, but in the mountains it's hard on the engine not to mention unsafe for driving. Same thing in the rain or snow.
