Squeaky Belt ?

I had a small squeak on my v6 2017, figured it was the serpentine belt and after talking to my trusty pops decided to just spray some belt dressing he had on the shelf in his garage on it instead of spending the entire day at Toyota for it (still under warranty). Squeak instantly became horrendously worse. Whole block could probably hear it. I'll post a video later. We thought maybe the belt dressing was bad so went out and bought another can and sprayed a liberal amount on it and got it to go away but then came out and fired her up again a few hours later and its back as bad as ever. Leads me to believe I need to replace the belt now. Thought I'd post on here for some help/ideas. Think I screwed myself trying to fix it myself or you think Toyota might still replace it under warranty?

 

Are you absolutely sure the squeak is coming from the belt? These trucks HPFP likes to make noise like you have a cricket farm under the hood.

 

Im not positive the small original squeak I heard was from the belt but this new loud noise after the belt dressing is definitely the belt.

 

I found this on YouTube, a little way into it you can hear the HPFP chirping.

I use a bbq brush on belts, it cleans the little rocks out of the grooves and usually stops premature belt squeaks. I do it on trucks mainly due to the road conditions they see.

 

Hmm interesting idea.. do it while its running? Sorry if thats a stupid question. I'm new to wrenching trying to learn

Yup sketchy as fuck but it works.

Dressing is a band aid, brush works for me about 50% of the time.

The problem now with the belt dressing is, all the pulley's are coated. You need to clean them before installing new belt. Found this out the hard way along time ago.

 

Thats what I was worried about. How do I do that?

 

Wipe them down with lacquer thinner, or denatured alcohol. Test on small area first. I haven't look closely at all pulley's, some maybe composite, don't want one or other to eat into pulley's. Back in the day they were all steel pulley's.

That sounds like a bad idler pulley to me.

 

It wasn't hardly making any noise until I sprayed the belt dressing on the belt. You think belt dressing could ruin a pulley?
