That was my point but for the life of me I can’t figure out how the pencil head that I linked to would work either but I read that people are using them. Maybe it just fits up in the center and is not supposed to lock? Seems it could get messy. I don’t know.

I just took a standard one and put it on the bench grinder, kinda looks like I put it in a giant pencil sharpener.

Thanks, and for the life of me why would they go from 5 to 2? I know the lifetime components are being pushed but I’ve never seen a lifetime anything last like it should.

I’m guessing the non serviceable joints are cheaper to manufacture , gotta pay for all those safety features somehow ....

Any other greasing points beside the shafts? like at wheels, LCA/UCA, ball joints, gas tank, head lights?

Strangely enough, IIRC, my MY18 has three zerks. And I was able to hook onto them all easily with my grease gun. Didn't need to take off any heat shields.

Aftet you remove that little shield rotate the shaft till the zerk is roughly at the 7 O'clock position as I found that to be about the easiest way, no yoga prep needed, lol.

    Absolutely...
You know what the number one cause of failure for u-joints is according to Spicer? Lack of proper lubrication.
As far as the severity of further driveline component damage/failure; it depends on the circumstances surrounding said failure.
Chirping u-joints with corroded needles; replace and move on.
U-joint coming apart at 70 mph resulting in driveline seperation....well you get the point.

When it warms up, I'll slide under there again to take a look. I greased them in the Spring of last year.

Just greased mine at a little over 10,000 miles on my 18 trd and they purged pretty quick, only a pump or two.

This will work. Just make sure you press hard enough on the zerk to push down the spring loaded ball or it can get messy.
If you’re getting crafty, you might want to try a right angled needle fitting.

Thanks! I kind of thought it would work but thought it would take some pressure. Thanks for the advice!

I've done it in a hurry at work when I don't want to swap fittings or a regular zerk is in a bad spot.

I'll end with my obligatory statement of "damn I'm glad I have a 2nd gen, all 5 of my zerks are easy to lube." :p

I won’t go there BUT I like the refinement of my 3rd gen but miss the reliability of my 2nd gen. :) I’ve had my share of issues but won’t hijack the thread with them. FWIW, Toyota has been great working through them with me.
I think I’m going to see if I can get to the tough ones with what I have. If not, Amazon here I come.

Could you swap a driveshaft that has fittings? (when the time comes)
