Installation Challenges

I'm installing a new head unit. I ordered the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Radiopro4 Ty11. According to Crutchfield, this will allow me to connect my radio and retain my steering wheel controls and the reason I spent the money on this harness.

Two issues I'm having:

1) No steering wheel controls

I think the culprit is in the picture below. Circled is what I believe is the steering wheel controls. However, the PAC RP4 does not have a harness that attaches to that. Am I correct that this is the harness for the steering wheel controls? If it's not, then I know I need to move on to the next step of troubleshooting. If it is, then...what do I do?

2.) Back up camera

I was hoping that the backup camera would be just a plug and play, since Crutchfield didn't recommend any harnesses for it. That was dumb of me. I have no clue what wire/wires control the backup camera, if there's a harness that I need to buy, or where it goes.

The head unit I'm installing is the ATOTO A6 Pro. Not a household name, but it has the functionality I want and has gotten great reviews. This unit has a Rear Camera (+) wire and an Rear Camera (-) wire, but no idea what to do with them.

 

For steering wheel controls, you will need to consult the manual or manufacturer of the radio, or possibly PAC. The pac piece is made and programmed for radios with the blue/yellow wire or the 3.5mm jack. It will require special wiring and possibly custom programming to work with 2-wire radios like the one you have.

For the camera, you’ll need the pac ty11 harness.

 

It has the 3.5mm piece. I know I might need to do some manual setup with the PAC, but my question is...that harness I have circled...isn't that the Tacoma steering wheel controls? If so, then the problem is that those don't connect to anything, not even the PAC.

 

As far as the camera, I have the PAC RP4.2-TY11. I thought that was it. Is there another PAC TY11?

 

There is a CAM TY11 harness available separately.

For the steering wheel controls, they are not in the connector you have circled. I want to say they’re in the long skinny 28 pin but I’m not positive without looking at the diagram

On the pac, with it plugged in to the truck (the radio doesn’t have to be plugged in, just the pac) see if the red LED on top blinks or flashes or anything when you push a button on the steering wheel. If it does, you know that the pac is getting the signal it needs. Then you just have to get it programmed with the radio

I've ordered the harness for the rear camera. When it gets here, I'll install that and work on programming the steering controls.

Update: I got a reply email from PAC. The rep stated that the PAC RP4 WILL work with this head unit for the steering wheel controls. He gave me some instructions on how to make it work. So, fingers crossed.

 

I used the RP4.2-TY11 and I trashed it because disconnecting the car battery messes up the module & I found it was not totally reliable.

I think the Maestro RR is a much better module. PAC's module is a POS as far as I'm concerned..

 

I'm looking at this same head unit as well. Did you purchase the Toyota specific A6? That's my first decision and I've contacted Atoto's customer support to try and find out. I don't have SWC in my truck so thankfully I won't need to deal with the wiring for that. Same goes for a backup/reverse camera, no factory backup camera in my truck so that would be aftermarket which should be a simple plug and play deal... I hope.

So with all of that being said, I shouldn't have a need for the PAC RP4.2-TY11, and I can just use the harness that comes with the head unit right? It's been a few years since I installed a head unit so i'm feeling a bit second-guessy.

I returned the Atoto. I spent a week trying to get it to connect so I could use things such as google maps and waze, but no luck.

Got the Pioneer 2300 instead.

 

Got it installed today, everything is working great and was a much easier process than my Acura.

 

I'm installing a atoto a6 pro today and trying to figure out swc. What did you do/use? Atoto told me I could get swc working with only the

Axxess AX-TOY28SWC wiring harness's but using the 3.5mm wire doesn't work and it appears that is going to a plug on the AX-TOY28SWC going nowhere. Any idea which wire(s) on the tacoma side are swc?
