What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

They look different than the regular Dakars to me but I can't be sure since I don't have them anymore...looks almost like maybe there's an extra overload leaf on them which is odd because the AAL doesn't go there. Anyway post up some pics when they're installed

 

They look like the shorter 95-97 ones.

 

Well..yeah of course it fits. It's the exact same 7.5" front diff.

1st gen tundras and 1st gen sequioas have the same drive line basically. Well same tcase and diffs.

Toyota didn't update the front diff till second gen tacos and tundras and 4th gen 4runners. Finally did the rear diff then for tundras and sequoias but left the rear alone in the Tacoma and 4runner until 2016. Way overdue by that point.

 

@what road brought up doubts due to the total chaos lt axles being modified tundra axles. Pretty sure they just mod them for more articulation. This was just confirming my suspicion. I had no doubt they were the same lol

 

Yeah all it is is grinding out the tulip joint cup so it won't bind for Max travel.

 

That’s what I figured. But I had the diff. Might as well confirm it. Since @Area51Runner is looking for a front diff. Figure it’d help

 

Worth it

It keeps going up in price every time they restock, so best to jump on it now if you can

 

Got the ext travel (mid travel) Fox’s off the 4R and I to the Taco.
Also pulled the 3rd leaf and biggest overload leaf out of the Dakar pack. It’s the 97’ shorter style and I have a pretty light bed area-it ride like a Mack truck, now it’s like butta’ . If it settles out a bunch I can always and one or both back in.

 

When you push the clutch pedal down to the floor , everything inside the transmission stops turning . With this being said , there are more diagnostics needed to pinpoint what is actually making the squealing noise

 

Could possibly be the throwout bearing.

 

Well of course now the sound has gone away, and stopped

 

ALWAYS buy quality greaseable u-joints.
There isn’t no reason you should even have to change them in these trucks for with the exception of neglect.
I (like millions of other driveshaft owners) have driven the living piss out of my truck rock crawling, flying down trails pretending it’s a prerunner lol, for the last 100k miles, I know have 225 on the clock, driveshafts still function like new...
Just like your engine, if you don’t keep it lubricated, it will fail prematurely.

Double Cardan, not cardin

Again, these don’t just fail, they should last the life of your truck, exception being neglect to lubricate them Or complete disregard for proper drivetrain angles...




All the equipment on your rigs with zerk fittings installed need to be lubricated/inspected every oil change or 5k miles..
Exception being the slip joint on the drive shaft... I’ve seen inexperience cause damage to these by over lubrication. They require only enough to provide lube, I’ve seen guys pump them full with a tube of grease which is terrible for everything involved. Too much can prevent the joint from compressing when it needs to when the suspension compresses or when accelerating/decelerating. As a result it puts tons of load on both drivetrain pieces they driveshaft connects to also potentially causing failures of those components be-it differentials, transfercase, or transmission.

 

Mine to a rock smashed my carrier bearing and then a cap on the DC split. Had to replace it with a Napa driveshaft. That noise it made was super annoying.

 

I think you’re referring to your driveshaft support bearing, and if that got “smashed” by a rock, driveshaft damage was inevitable and arguably related to the grease fitting

 

Yup oh well part of the fun. Besides thing was rusty and hard to remove ujoints.

 

Well done. I really need to set down and figure out how to rekey my locks on the other vehicles.

 

You looked into using a slide hammer? That's what we used on the trail and it came out after the 2nd or 3rd hit.

 

Probably the 2nd most important tool to have.

These are my Dakars, no AAL. I can see why @eon_blue was wondering since they do look different from mine. Missing a main leaf and an overload when compared to mine. Like he said, maybe they are the shorter ones?
