    Ha, not magnesium cheating.
My steel is good. An old Nicholson file. A friend I showed the kit to made sparks right away. no problem. It is me.
    Practice, practice, practice.

    Morning all:
Which mattress did you get? Read many times about people with backache where one needs a soft mattress and another needs a firm mattress. ????? I always buy the "rock", in other words the firmest mattress that I can find.

Slow response, I know. Just had to add... I own a '46 Stude M-5 Champion (p-up). Been in the family since new (granddad-dad-me) and it was my daily driver for 8 years (2 years at university, first 5 years of work, 1 year after mil) and it brought my daughter home from hospital after she was born. Passed it down to my nephew when I went active duty, but reclaimed it when I got back since he didn't want it. Now sits idle so I can drive my Taco.

English flint is very good, if not the best. Loaded me pockets w/ as much as I could carry last time I was there. The stuff was just lying around in the open, every where I hiked.
It is ALL about the edge. The sharper the better and then use that edge to cut / shave-off the steel.

Reminds me of my experience in Boy Scouts back in the dark ages. My folks had an old Indian flint spear head. I took it to a scout meeting to demonstrate fire starting with flint and steel, tho I had no experience doing it. Never got a fire started and brought home a few chips.

I use the striker and the mag rod. I need to practice some, thought of inviting some friends this summer to another survival style hike, this time only using flint and steel or one of the mag rod and steel to start flames, either a wood fire or stove. I've had friends on a couple different hikes, last was a 12 item trip.
My last old stove given to me, made by Prentiss Wabers.

Love that stove Duane. I have a few PWs. A single and double burner with wagon wheel dials are my favorites.

I recently had to learn the difference between the ferro rod being scraped and the flint and steel methods.
Ferro rod is a Ferrocerium rod that emits sparks when scraped with something sharp.
Flint and steel is a hardened high carbon steel being scraped by a very sharp rock that results in steel burning as it flies off into the air.
A saw, hatchet, knife, or a striker works. Quartz, chert, flint, and others work to cut the steel.

I am pretty good with the ferro rod. I am hit or miss, mostly miss, so far, with the flint and steel. I have a chunk of flint, and I have a bunch of chert. We have a lot of quartz around where I live.

I got the flint is a small kit I bought locally at Carolina readiness Supply. It had the flint, steel, jute and charcloth.

I made another piece of steel from an old file I have. Annealed it, cut a piece, ground off the teeth, flattened the edges, then heated to red/orange and quenched.

I have made some batches of char cloth the last few years. That is cool.

Thanks for the advice. Do you recall how yours turned out? Today is a full week since the cold symptoms ended, and still the throat thing persists. It really is minor, and I'm completely normal otherwise. Well, as normal as I get...

Thanks folks! Yes my yodeling time had been greatly reduced! :p

I have several friends and relatives who swear by the Sleep Number beds. Each side has its own firmness control so each person can tailor it to their preference.

I sleep on pretty much anything that doesn't move under me so I tend to be happy with whatever my wife is into at the time. Right now it is a memory foam pad on top of the mattress. Eh, whatever.

Looking for a new mattress too. I tried a Casper and it felt nice but pricey. Need to look at the sleep number beds next.
