Torque converter lockup has eliminated most of the fuel economy deficiencies of the slush box. The other issue is decel fuel injector cut. If you coast to a stop in an automatic you get infinite mpg. Most people just race up to the red lights then brake heavily so few people get any benefit from it.

“Based on data from 700 vehicles, 32,526 fuel-ups and 9,429,669 miles of driving, the 2017 Toyota Tacoma gets a combined Avg MPG of 18.52 with a 0.03 MPG margin of error.”

What if you anticipate a red light in manual and drop into neutral before braking?

Good question. Can’t cut fuel in that situation because the wheels aren’t driving the engine. But that will increase the longevity of your clutch plate.

Just rolled past 2000 miles on the odometer, haven't really gotten better then 14.5 yet. I know I have a little bit bigger tires, but still. I'm really hoping it gets better yet... Just got OVTune in recently and messing around with it, currently running a tank of premium through along with the 91 octane tune to see if ethanol-free fuel helps my cause.

My MPG went out the door the second the truck was in my ownership. Now all I care about is SPG, Smiles Per Gallon which is a ton

After putting AT tires on my mileage really went down, like 2-3mpg

Where you live can make a big difference in MPG. I just moved from Jackson Ca. I was getting 16 mpg at best around town. I now live in Kingman AZ and I'm getting 20 mpg easy around town. Kingman is 3300' elevation and mostly flat. Jackson is 1200' elevation with lots of hills. I am very happy with the better mpg.

Your fuel bill isn’t going to be your only savings. Congratulations on escaping California.

You are absolutely correct. There are too many variables here for apples to apples comparisons.

I'm averaging 19.1 at the moment. I'm driving the highway in Baton Rouge.... when I get to drive traffic, it'll drop to 17.6ish. Right now, I'm driving way early and way late and avoiding most traffic.

How you accelerate, and if you drive faster than 70 mph will kill your mileage in this truck.

Oh, I've got General Grabber AT2s in 265/75R16 and no air dam..... plus a camper shell and a bunch of stuff in the back.

My fuel mileage sucked at first too. After awhile it did improve a couple mpg though. 19.4 is my lifetime best avg for a tank. I'm modded and 4x4 and can get 22 on the highway sometimes still though. I'm usually happy if I can hit 20 mpg though.

I am at about 18.4mpg right now with the winter blend. Live in Southern Idaho at about 3700' elevation. Do a lot of mountain driving here (range from 3500 - about 9000' elevation). During the summer last year, was getting about 22.5. And this is using the lowest octane fuel.
