I have to take discord with all of the fanboys on this forum who bash any people who voice their displeasure with the way their 3rd gen transmissions are behaving.

I don't understand the logic of conniving and shaming the buyer because of the nuisance the comments personally cause you. Move on to the next thread or just don't respond if you don't have anything constructive to add to the conversation. If your truck is free of any issues, I am legit happy for you, and this thread isn't for you. Good for you!

Again, it is illogical to kick shit into the long grass simply because you aren't dealing with it, and it's actually pathetic to condescend to others for the same reason. I want to talk about the issues of this truck, I want to know who else is dealing with them, and I want us all to collectively figure out what to do, and whether or not Toyota is planning to do something about it. I'm a little annoyed by the jingoism of certain members on here who tell people to stfu and deal with it. Some people are unhappy, and that's perfectly fine. Let's all find out what to do next in order to remedy our issue. I know the 3.5's got their ECU's flashed and it seemed to fix the problem, but the 2.7 crew cab owners are still dealing with it. This thread is for them.

$5 says whatever you can pop up to be unhappy with , there's a thread on it already .

It's not the topic that makes people cranky , it's the users who don't use the search button

Not bashing but there are several threads about the computer updates offered by Toyota (that is what they are doing about it) anything beyond that, Toyota is good with what it is. Lower end power over high end power. That is their solution. The issue is the number of members that get on and expect it to drive like an xrunner or a car.

I’m not downplaying your grief and am glad I enjoy how mine operates. This is just the answer to your questions.

Hope it all works out for you.

This is true, there are a lot of ppl made cranky by the repeated "issue" threads.

There is, however, a pack of members who will ALWAYS descend upon negative posts with a vengeance. Anti-smitty style. Check the user names, it's the same bunch every time.

    Meh.

Thank you for replying with kindness. I know Toyota released an ECU flash for the 3.5's but I spoke to corporate and so far nothing for the 2.7s, and no word on whether or not something is in the works for it.

Here is a description of what I'm dealing with (2.7 crew cab):
    - speeds under 65mph: the truck runs like a charm, absolutely no issues with it.
    - speeds above 65mph: truck shifts into 6th, can't handle it, downshifts into 4th at 6000 rpms (jolting passengers back into their seats), then upshifts to 5th, then back to 6th, then downshifts to 4th all over again, and the strenuous cycle never stops.

My fix: keep it in S5, and never go above 70-75 MPH. RPM's wont go above 3000, and no crazy downshifting.

What I would like to see: 75mph in D-mode running the 6th gear at 2200-2500 rpms.

Maybe because those miserable expect those that are not to do something about their misery or at least share in it. Those that are not just want to be left alone. Kinda reflects real life.

My 2ng does not have enough gears, and it is slow. This comes as no surprise as its a 4 speed 4cyl.

    I don't know what it's like compared to a 3dg.

With all due respect, Why are you expecting an over weight 4 cylinder truck to maintain 75 mph in what is essentially a second overdrive?

I don't know if my new '18 was flashed before I bought it, but I haven't had any issues with shifting, lack of power or anything else I've read about on this forum, knock on wood. I am extremely pleased with the performance of my 5th Toyota 4x4!

Ahhhh, see now that is valid. Didn’t realize yours was a 2.7. Also I think you came with it better then others like “f this truck” or “I’m so pissed I bought a gen3.” A lot of guys just bitch and leave it at that. Then that brings out the over fan boys or guys that just hate random bitching. I sometimes fall into the second category. Again, hope you find a solution. I have not searched any issues because I don’t have them BUT hope you find what your looking for.

Fair enough. But there's a far spread between the " my truck sucks. It's under powered. It shifts too much. I didn't test drive my truck and have 20 posts " compared to the guys who just go " yeah I don't have that issue with my truck " response, not saying that it doesn't happen, but are just representing the other portion to say an audience who doesn't have a Tacoma and is researching them.

No denying there are certainly people who have the "my truck is a perfect unicorn" attitude as well. But let's just call it what it is 99% of the time.

its an open forum and people are certainly allowed to post whatever the feel. Go for it. But most understand that if you're looking for tunes and are in the tuning thread , let it be if it doesn't apply to you.

Now the " should I get this truck " threads is open game as far as concern, because at that point you're not arguing people's issues, you're just representing a population.

Or is this all just a case of people getting upset because

Step 1) upset about engine performance
Step 2) gets upset when someone asked if they test drove it before they bought it.

All in the attitude . I only know what I know, but some new people just ask honest questions instead of complaining , and I personally just give them links to the info they need no problem

Fair question, but shouldn't the smart ECU be able to find the right median on its own without making the truck behave like a accordion on blow?

That's certainly how I conduct my business here usually. Based how I perceive the post to be written. If OP sounds like a first time car buyer, I'll help him out. But thoroughly know how to use the internet, navigate to TW, create an account and start the tangent, it's open season.

See I think this is valid. No reason for constant up and down shifting cycle unless your going up and down hills. You shouldn’t have to put it into “s” to keep a constant gear when you are maintaining a constant speed. Traveling at the average speed limit shouldn’t be too much to ask unless the truck is loaded down or pulling something. As a stock truck, that should’ve been considered. I don’t think the OP is being unreasonable. Again unless you add things outside of the stock equation; hills, heavy load, trying to pull a small trailer, etc.

The only thing I hate about my 3rd gen is that my mpg gets better when I drive with ect pwr compared to without it on. and I mean it’s a truck and it’s known to have poor mpg but how does that work? I thought it would be the opposite affect.:annoyed:
