Free oil changes are a marketing ploy to condition you to doing service and repair business with the dealer. We are creatures of habit. Free oil changes are an inducement to create that habit.

Yes, 5000 "service", which only involves an oil change at every 10,000. During the "odd" 5000 services they check and fill fluids, rotate tires, inspect, etc.

Toyota care is at 10k, I wanted it changed at 5k and paid for it. Toyota does not owe us free oil every 5k miles.

Well, just like you said. It was found in the manual:)
If people could spend a little time reading the manual there wouldn’t be much question.

I'm just going to compromise and put my oil drained at 5k back in at 10k.

5K Service is for a Tire Rotation, no oil change.

Oil changing interval threads are like debating with folks that believe that the Loch Ness monster and skunk apes exist. Finding "metal particles" in your oil filter is like those fuzzy black and white pictures of a hairy creature in the swamp way off in the distance.

Since no human on earth can prove a negative, these dumpster fire threads will persist indefinitely. But at least now I know when someone asks how often to change their oil, the correct response should be "what religion are you?".

So I assume since it has not been mentioned, that Toyota does not use a break in oil in new vehicles?

Interesting that the Camry, using the same oil, Toyota recommended interval is 5K.

I wonder the same thing. I know for a fact that Honda/Acura does (I've done Blackstone analysis) their factory fill was very high in Moly (630 ppm+). That's why I usually keep that oil in the engine for at least 5k miles. BTW: Anyone on here done Blackstone or similar on their Tacoma?

As per the manual, the change interval with 0w20 is 10k and every 10k thereafter unless you are operating predominantly under ‘special conditions’ (towing, dusty roads, short trips, frequent idling). Then your 1st change is at 5k and every 5k thereafter.

I use blackstone for my 2nd gen Tacoma. There is a thread somewhere that people post their results. My recommended oci is 12,500 miles.

Does anyone have any resources or empirical evidence of a car manufacturer denying engine warranty based on undocumented oil changes or inconsistent oil change intervals? Not targeting engine lifespan at this point just warranty claims.

e.g Toyota denied warranty claim for engine repair because of a skipped oil change or self changed oil

When I did my first oil change at 10k, the level was approx 3/4 of a quart low on the dipstick. Assuming from the engine breaking in and surfaces seating against each other. Just keep an eye on your level between now and 10k and you'll be fine.

In the 3 changes since the initial oil change the oil level hasn't moved on the dipstick.

10k is correct. But it never hurts to do a breakin oil change at 1k.

No one ever ruined a motor by doing oil changes more often than the "Toyota Engineers" recommend. I do my at 5K max.

Even with 25k OCIs, the likeliness of an oil related failure is pretty slim before the warranty is up. It's when you're in the 225k -300k range that your diligence with oil changes will benefit you.

I did the same. I use it a lot on dusty desert trails, but might not worry about it in the future.

I will give my 2 cents even though it is not Toyota denying the claim. I once was between gigs and worked for one of those aftermarket used car warrantee companies for exactly 2 days. So I asked straight up what do we do if we have a client who repeatedly sells shit cars that we get dinged for claims. I was told straight up it is covered in the small print. Everyone misses some sort of maintenance. So there is not one single vehicle we have to pay claims for if we really want to deny them. Slimy business model but they pay out when they want to and deny when it is expensive or a dealer sends them too many claims.

So on the aftermarket end they will deny you at whim. So my assumption with Toyota is they will do good faith or pro-rated repairs in some cases. BUT they realistically could deny you if they don’t have a service history that was spotless. I also believe they will look at their exposure if you sued them for the repairs. What is reasonable? If you routinely went in for and oil change +/- 25 miles would a judge deny your lawsuit because you went over the OCI by 25 miles once or more than once?

Now self changed oil. I know some jurisdictions have fought on this one. Specifically the speedy oil change companies fought to be recognized as equal to dealer in terms of OCI and keeping warrantee valid. I would have to check my jurisdiction specifically but I believe we can do self oil changes with valid receipts and all service logged. It has to be very good records. Simply opening up a shoe box of receipts doesn’t count as valid. What constitutes complete records I would have to research but I am 100% some jurisdictions allow self oil changes to be accepted in terms of keeping warrantee valid.
