Maybe, but with all the excitement over the new Ranger and Gladiator, they may feel the need to act quicker.

 

And yet until the 2020 version they don't even have power seats, let alone memory power seats.

 

Shall I be the first to ask...What's the biggest size tire I can fit on the 2020 tacoma without a lift?

 

My predictions beyond the headlights, front facial update, and the addition of powered (but non-memory) seats:

- New Entunes headunit that includes Android Auto (like the Corolla, etc)
- 8-speed (for the AT)

...and that's it. Mid-cycle refreshes are usually mild. Dropping in a new seat and headunit is easy for them to do. As for the transmission, it only makes sense since it is proven in other Toyotas. Plus it may even help them eck out another MPG (which helps their overall Fleet EPA figures if they can do that)...which I think is more important to them over making it more enjoyable for the customers.

 

I wonder if the headlights will have some black or be pretty much all chrome around what looks like LEDs?

 

I doubt anything different with transmission. That’s not typically part of a refresh.

 

Agreed. I think this really boils down to a few cosmetic-deep changes to grab a headline given the spotlight has been shining on the new comers to the market.

 

While I agree the odds are low, they did it with the Land Cruiser. 2008-15 had a 6 speed. 16+ have 8 speed. With all the complaints about shifting, I could see it being done.

 

3.0 Diesel that gets 33mpg and tows 7700lbs I'd trade mine in. Other than that, I'm keeping mine.

Yep, the changes were locked-in about 1 year ago. It has always been on the table to do a big facelift for MY 2020. Basically this:

• Launch in late 2015 (16MY)
• Minor refresh: in late 2017 (18MY)
• Mid-Cycle facelift in Autumn 2019 (2020MY).
• End of production, Summer 2022. (This could change, but TNGA-F proves to demand the shift of BOF trucks to it ASAP)

For a mid-cycle facelift? Not exactly. Mid-cycle changes go into development anywhere between, after engineering sign-off of the launch model year or after sales launch and take about 3 years to develop from start.

Unlike a new model generation that requires final design definition 33 months before production begins, facelifts only need about 1 1/2 years or slightly less at 15-16 months to from design changes being finalized to building it in the factory. Some require 18-21 months, out of 3 to 3 1/2 years. Taking 5 to 7 years, is a whole new model generation from planning to launch. Toyota would go bankrupt taking that long to develop facelifts.

You're right, as the P703 is Q4 2021 at earliest. That's the basis of the U725 Bronco of course, which you'll start seeing camo come springtime and...(don't expect it before Valentine's Day 2021)

Yeah, that's the problem with the T6. The new U725 and P703 will fix that. 2020 and 2021 are big years for Ford. Ford and Toyota will be battling out next year regarding press over the 954A Tundra and P702 F-150.

Not in this case. End of production is coming in quite less than 5 years, Summer of 2022 (however that can change). The last Tacoma ran actually 11 years, not 10 years. First generation was launched in March 1995 and was the official Tacoma until October 17, 2004. Second generation was the incumbent Tacoma from October 18, 2004 to September 9, 2015. Current Tacoma went on sale September 10, 2015 and will get superseded by a TNGA-F based truck in 2022-23, except if the Aug 2022 date is pushed back.

The internal goal is to shift the body-on-frame products to TNGA-F as soon as possible, after the large set (Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia) get redesigned first over the next 2-3 years. Then trickle down to the midsizers in 2022-23. Like the Tacoma, the Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runner get facelifts this year as 2020 models to buy some time with full replacements being 4 years out.

This would appear to be some halogens.

 

Look close. You can see a bulb array. I'm betting designed LEDs. Odd to not be projectors, but . . .
