The same for me in a very different climate - dusty New Mexico roads. If after a given oil change I'm doing a lot of fieldwork with low range slow driving and a lot of dust and dirt, I change it less than 10,000. Same with trans, transfer case, and diffs. I'm now retired and don't do as much fieldwork, so I will probably go 10,000. I can imagine at the temperatures you experience in winter, the engine doesn't necessarily get warm. The former tappet brothers on NPR used to use that as a criterion for oil changing more frequently. They both had PhDs in auto engineering. I'm just a geologist. I trust them implicitly.

Nah, I'm pretty sure everyone is on the same page regarding first oil change, oil change interval, and the one you forgot about: Which oil to use??

"Toyota and Lexus owners manuals stipulate oil changes every 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first, under normal driving conditions, and 5,000 miles or four months under severe driving conditions."

"Alemany said she showed her dealer oil change receipts from Jiffy Lube showing that she had changed the oil in the Sienna regularly."

"I might not have done oil changes every 4,000 miles," she said. "I have some at 4,000 and some at 6,000 - but I have had oil changes. But they wouldn't accept my Jiffy Lube receipts."

"Similarly, Robin Burpee, a 38-year-old homemaker in Mendon, Mich., says she was refused warranty coverage for sludge damage even after showing her dealership, Sunshine Toyota Inc. of Battle Creek, receipts for regular oil changes. Her leased 2000 Sienna XLE broke down on the highway in November and had to be towed."

I changed mine at around 1200 when new, and every 5k since then. But it's my vehicle my money. No one here is going to fight for me if I develop sludge related damage.
It wouldn't be the first time there have been problems

Interesting, it looks like Toyota did end up paying for the repairs but had to go to arbitration. Kind of a pain. We have seen Toyota deny claims simply because of assumed vehicle use as well such as 4wd failures so I guess its not unfounded that they would deny engine claims.

Welcome to TW! Did my first change at 3k. All other changes have been done at 10K intervals. In the last ten years, I've had three vehicles go to 170k-200K miles each with 10K oil changes and never had any engine issues. Sold them at that point and never had a second owner complain. Take that for whatever it is worth...

I don't see that they paid for everything such as rental cost and the great inconvenience due to the denials.

But TBH, there's no absolute and concrete evidence that the shop(s) actually replaced the oil they charged for either. Other than receipts, how could that be proved if the customer did not actually witness it?
I mean, I doubt all of them did actually double checked to make sure the work they paid for was performed. Just a thought...

There have been some cases that I know where someone brought it in for service and it wasn't performed.
I believe It is always a good practice for the consumer to learn about their vehicles or have someone they know and trust do it for them.

Edit: The moral of the story, change the oil as recommended or as you see you the need to

Funny thing is most people worried about longevity probably won’t even keep it long enough to find out or only drive 10k miles a year. Change it as much as you want, you won’t break it... just pissing away money. My truck has been serviced 10 times in the 3+ years I’ve owned it, 104k miles and runs like new. I drive the piss out of it, never once has it even flinched.... hell I’ve never even pulled the dipstick! There’s no need to be all up in arms about the damn oil changes, live and let live.

Just completed my first oil change @ 3250 miles..changed the plastic filter cap to metal, OEM oil filter, and used Mobil 1 Advanced. I will do the 10k intervals going forward.

Directly from the manufacturer from a phone conversation:
The reason why the first oil change would take place later is because the oil from the factory contains particles that need to bond with the engine metals during engine break in. After the first oil change, oil can be replaced at owners preference but it is higher recommended to let the factory oil assist with engine break in.

I think the last hold out manufacturer that still used Break In Oil was Honda.

I thought the same thing. From what I remembered hearing, companies stopped doing that in 2011. But this is what a rep from Toyota Corp (not the dealer) told me recently.

And to be fair, Toyota is normally “behind” modern times when it comes to some things.

    Disclaimer: I’m no expert.
I have a 2004 mustang with a pro charger that I put about 300 miles on per year. I used to run amsoil. I spoke with an amsoil rep and they recommend changing at least every year regardless of mileage. Pro charger recommends the same for their self contained units (it’s an 8oz synthetic for $17). I bought my taco with 6 miles on it. It’ll take me 2 1/2 years to hit 10k. Anyone else ever hear of the yearly change for lesser driven vehicles?
