Yes, look at the expense ratios and fees associated with the investment options you want to be in. It’s very possible that your 401k plan has much higher fees than an IRA for a similar/the same investment option. A 1% management fee doesn’t seem like much on the surface, but over 40 years it could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

so then my next question, is doing mutual funds for an IRA going to be as involved as choosing stocks and options in my personal portfolio with TDAmeritrade.

i guess I'm unsure how an IRA differs than what I'm currently doing.

It doesn't have to be, no. You could just do a simple target date fund and it would basically just be a set it and forget it type deal. Although they're typically a little more conservative than I prefer.

The biggest difference between an IRA and a personal taxable brokerage account is that the IRA is tax sheltered. So you either pay the tax upfront(Roth), or can postpone it until retirement(traditional).

Some of those target funds have 30% or more in foreign investments and don't tell you exactly what companies they're investing in. After that I moved my money into an index fund (basically the SP500 mirror) that had extremely low fees. Even so, now I'm in short term treasuries since I'm not confident on the market outlook. Rather take 3-4% this year than lose more of my hair with the volatility lol

I wonder how many government workers will get a huge paycheck after shutdown ends and then proceed to spend it stupidly.

You don’t worry about volatility as much if you only look at your account balance once a quarter ;)

also if you buy a ROTH IRA you cannot deduct the cost off the end of the year taxes you just get tax free distributions after 65 years old, with conventional IRA you can take a full deduction on your income taxes but pay taxes on the distributions

Tomorrow should be interesting with AAPL beating their revised guidance and going up 6% in after hours trading. Wonder if it will hold?

Honestly surprised the Fed decision wasn't already priced in. It seemed pretty obvious to me since it's only January and they said they would only do two hikes this year

The fed mentioned patience and the market loved it.
