19.3 MPG for first tank.

Yup, extang is just another bed cover that reduces the drag when driving. 50/50 city and highway driving without exceeding 2000 rpm and 70 mph enables me to achieve that 23 miles. with the ever increasing price of gas, one can't help but to find ways to stretch the mpg. I got my tacoma nov of '06 and already chalked 17K miles in it.

 

What is the best thing to do for good fuel miles, i Have a k&n intake, Magnaflow exhaust and i run only 94 octane..are there chips also for these trucks?
I average 16 mpg city 19 highway. Around 400 miles per tank.

It's no big secret:
(1) Come off the line slowly and just gather speed at a slow constant rate (no jack rabbiting).
(2) Try to keep the RPM's below 1,600 (you can easly cruise at 1,200 to 1,300 RPMs at 45-50 MPH)
(3) Do not drive over 65 MPH (normally I'm driving between 45 to 60 MPH since there is no freeway driving involved)
(4) 32 PSI in my tires
(5) No extra weight in the truck (and this includes having larger/heavier tires & wheels)
(6) Pass people only if you do not have to "gun it" to get around them
(7) Not try to beat the guy next to you to the next stoplight

Does all of this take discipline, yes, but then you have to decide just what is more important and drive accordingly.

 

I drove to the EEA convention / fly in from the river and got 23 MPG on 87 with no booze on two lane roads.

 

the hondas and nissans who wana race see what an 06 tacoma can do, thats a cause of not fo good miles per gallon. Ha. These trucks are dang quick, im impresed. I have a buick gn thats crazy fast but im very impresed with this toyota.

 

106Tacoma: I dont think running such high octane is helping. everyone on here that runs 87 or 89 seem to get the best milage. I use 89 and get 17-18 city and 20-21 highway. Just a thought...

 

I think that ndcouch is right. I think that 89 would do you just as well as the higher octane, and you wouldn't be throwing your money away. Most of the guys on here with the 4.0L seem to run 89 with the best results.

BTW - NO ETHANOL! The Toyota engines are not made to run on ethanol over 15%. It causes water buildup in the engine and fuel filter.

 

Yes i would get better miles with lower octane. But im old school and know how the internals hold up with a better burning fuel. Ive taken many engines apart to see carbon build up like mad. Ill stick with 94, also every time i change my oil i run luccas fuel sys cleaner. Before my truck i drove a 93 regal which i had since new, Cars engine still runs exelent 200,000 miles later. My sister drives it daily now.

 

^^yes!!! another one FTW! heh...yeah the good old octane debate. I've tried explaining it to my car club (mazda3) but most people just brushed it aside. I use the higher octane for the long run benefit. It may or may not yeild better results but the engine components looks alot better with a cleaner burning fuel. I found the engine runs smoother and doesn't struggle when you really want to stomp on it.

I used to work as a lot person for Toyota years ago and man, after seeing all those engines being taken apart and worked on...there was the proof. Some of the customers had regular oil changes and used the prescribed 87 octane (nothing wrong with that) till they needed a major engine overhaul. The amount of crap in those engines was unbelievable. It was worse in a car that did not have their maintanence up to date (meaning they skipped out on a few oil changes). This isn't to say that every car that ran 87 octane will need an engine overhaul or the engines will fail but if you were to take apart two engines with the same mileage but one of them on 87 and the other on 92, you will see a difference.

But as I say, each to their own. You put in what you want to put in. It's whatever makes you happy. After all, it is your vehicle and nobody elses right?

I took my truck on a 2 hour drive last weekend for breakfast. i know im nutts! But when i figured out the fuel miles i got 21.8 mpg! On 94 octane! Im so thrilled. Didnt even have to fill her back up for 3 days after, and my drive to work round trip is 40 miles. I love this truck!

 

Just to chime in on the octane thing, but I have been running 93 since I put the first tank in mine (I am sure the tank it came with from the dealer was 87).

However, I had not thought about the carbon build up, I just mainly use this truck for pulling our travel trailer, and the slight bump in torque you get with the higher octane can't hurt when towing.

106tacoma, getting 21.8mpg is impressive. The best I have done on an all highway trip running solo is 20.8. It must be the lack of drag on your truck from the debadging that gives you that extra MPG. I might have to think about removing mine.

 

must be hehe, i was very easy on it. Cruise control most the way. When i get on it allot and speed i get around 18 mpg highway. Ive been nice to her lately. The 94 does help with hills. I towed a 24" elclosed trailer with my nova in it 8 miles 1 time and the truck did very well.

 

Update, today i filled it up and checked my miles, mostly city driving. 22.3 MPG. I cant belive it myself but its amazing! Rember this is on 94 octane! And i was driving it hard the past 2 days. I love this truck more and more every day. I think im going to treat it to volk wheels and bigger bfg's.

 

And then there goes your gas milage (bigger wheels/tires).

 

nothing like bigger tires to give you that extra few mpg's you're looking for.....

 

This truck deserves a better wheel and tire package. It will remain the same stock size, just bigger wheel shorter tire.

 

Bigger wheel shorter tire = more unsprung weight = lower gas milage

A larger wheel "normally" weights more than a smaller wheel. Same diamater tires normally weight the same. Bottom line is greater weight fo what your are proposing to do.

 

dang really? O i guess ill save my money in more then 1 way.
