Hello fellow Tacoma-ers, I bought a 2004 Tacoma last year and I am wanting to do some things to it. Everything on it/in it is the original. I drive it daily back and forth to work, mainly highway. I would love for some advice/recommendations/ideas from you all. Thanks fellas!

I would bet it’s already 4wd, judging by the 6 lugs on the rims. Could be wrong though...

Install a union on the rear differential and extend the breather to your gas tank fill cap. That way if you go through some deep water your third member won’t take in a lot of water.

    His profile says pre runner.

5 lug = all two wheel drive
6 lug = pre runner 2wd on 4wd frame, as well as 4wd.

Its a Prerunner. Prerunners are 2wd 6 lug Tacomas on 4x4 frames...Toyota has been making them since 1998. They still make them today only they don't call them Prerunners anymore

Well you learn something everyday! Never knew that... I assumed that all 6 lugs were 4x4s. Thanks!

No "TRD Off-Road" sticker on the side of the bed.

Had my '02 stolen once - the thieves parked it and stripped it nearby. So some kind of theft-deterrent/lo-jack?

Twice got into a fender bender for lack of ABS. Your '04 should be good though.

    Supercharger.

I've got an 03 TRD PreRunner and it's freakin' great. I haven't done much to it except put 130k miles on the engine. I did add a Magnaflow exhaust which sounds great at all RPMs, a couple of subs to the back seat, a Pioneer touch screen head unit with navigation, and a 500w amp under the driver's seat.

The only thing I wish I had done when it was mostly new was add a Supercharger.

I'd leave it stock as possible. In another 4-5 years people will be drooling over it even more if kept clean.

Put some quality suspension parts on it. Struts / bushings/ ect to keep er riding well at stock height and enjoy.

Pre-runners are 2wd, but in the 6 lug configuration...

The easy way to tell, aside from a lack of a transfercase and front drivetrain is the rear mudflaps. If they're blank, it's a pre-runner. It will also have a pre-runner badge on the tailgate.

    @jkmoody
As far as mods, that's totally up to you. Lurk around here a while, read some threads, there are a ton of ideas in the "what did you do to it today" thread, and many many others.

We could all talk till we're blue in the face about all the mods we did to our trucks, but they likely won't be very useful to you since your tastes and style is different. Just drive the wheels off the thing, and you'll start getting an idea or two of things you want to change or modify. Maybe since you have a 4x4 now, you'll want to take it off road more. We can help with that either in this forum, or the off-road forum.

Best of luck and enjoy the new Toy!!

Lol.... I love it when people get all huffy about the idea of someone modifying a stock 1st gen...man you guys would be having a heart attack if you saw what my truck looked like when I bought it in 2016. Bone stock and 25k miles on it. Come at me :curls: :luvya:

I'm sure Toyota engineers did a thorough job creating it the way it is now. Once you start changing heights and angles it effectively becomes LESS optimal. But what's the fun in that?
Don't do anything to it unless you're ready for things to break and are willing to spend a lot of dough! If this is the case make it a long travel pre runner:)

I have a 2003 with 56k miles on it, made a couple minor changes to it but I saved all the stock parts.

I've considered lifting it but then it won't fit in my garage anymore lol.
