Actually that is the best idea yet on this thread. OP get ahold of your insurance and see what they say!

Eh... I've been *actually* snow plowing with mine for 8 years, and never broke anything.

Its not the "always locked" aspect that makes it constant velocity. Its the fact that the speed of the output shaft is precisely locked to the speed of the input shaft. This is in contrast with a universal joint (a more primitive component that does the same job), which will actually cause the output shaft to speed up and slow down relative to the input shaft. One of the reasons why there are BOOKS written about how to align driveshafts, is because you need to synchronize the u-joints so that one is in a slow-down position while the other is in a speed-up position, otherwise you get "driveline vibrations".

Probably what happened is this; when the CV was at too extreme of an angle, the shaft was subjected to much greater torque than it was capable of withstanding, and so the shaft twisted apart. Now if you look at the pictures, it didn't twist off cleanly, it cracked off on a fairly shallow angle. Since the tube isn't big enough to fit two of those shafts in side by side, something there had to give as well, so the broken shaft took out the tube.

I think there is a bit of a disconnect. Lots of "warm place" people coming in and commenting on "sudden traction". Well, OP was driving in SNOW. There's no such thing as sudden traction in snow. Snow is slippery. Deep snow is slippery. Shallow snow is slippery. ALL snow is slippery. You'll never get sudden traction while driving through a drift at any speed. So far the only two possible theories I've seen are (1) extreme CV angles caused the shaft to lock up, and (2) material defect.

    (1) would be OP's fault.
    (2) would be Toyota's responsibility.

And FYI since you've never driven in snow.... in snow driving, you are continually in a state of losing traction. If the snow is deep enough, it will bog you the hell down, if you start to bog down, GIVE IT EVERYTHING ITS GOT, 'cause that's the only way you might get through. Stop and you're stuck.

Eh.. growing up in Montana I would disagree. There are far too many types and consistencies of snow to simply say it is always slippery. Hard chunky snow can and does exist under powder or drifts. Soft slushy or powdery snow exists under a hard layer that is sometimes 1-3 inches thick. You could hit a large rock that was exposed before the snow came in. I have never “floored” my gas in snow simply to get through. I have given more gas but not at the level of WOT. We can agree to disagree but assuming everyone is from warm areas or never driven in snow is simply a hasty generalization.

Never said that everybody is from warm places. I said that warm place people don't know what snow is and should therefore keep their traps shut.

And of course snow comes in different consistencies, but NONE of them will yield high traction like hot asphalt.

No but you said “too many,” warm place people, most here don’t have a location displayed. For all we know you are from NM. Those same warm place people may have grown up in CO. With the OP having all but disappeared and no one knowing the story, I don’t see why anyone’s guess is any worse then another’s. For all we know the OP is full of shit was was in the mud in SC.

I think it’s pretty obvious that none of those things have as much traction as hot asphalt, neither does mud or crawling over rocks. I don’t remember a mention of hot asphalt even being a comparison.

Anyways, done arguing. You can have the last say if you want. My point is there are far to many factors to just make blanket statements that snow is always only super slick or snow has never been seen by anyone in FL or NM.

You're not making a point. You're just arguing for the sake of being argumentative.

Actually I stated my point. Which you disagree with even being a point. The internet is way to important to your ego so I’ll concede that you are correct in every statement you made. Hope that makes your day better. Everyone else- please continue.

You’re picking apart his statement as a generalization because you failed to comprehend it, and then said not all snow is slick. Maybe next you’ll try to convince us that not all water is wet.

Yes I had a hard time comprehending it. The point was that there are other factors in and around the snow, consistencies of snow and how hard it is or isn’t.

They had to give him a reason for warranty denial.
All he needs to do is provide a copy of the RO invoice so we can understand why and if it may be valid. And in so doing, he would be helping the forum members, not leaving it open to some wild innuendos and speculation. How hard can it be?

Anyone who hasn’t seen perfectly good things break when you are wheeling has never been really been wheelin’. It’s almost never the fault of the actual truck, it’s just the circumstances that cause damage.

Toyotas, jeeps, unimogs, hummers, pinzgauers are not bulletproof or idiot proof. They can all be spectacularly destroyed by the driver using the gas pedal at the wrong time.

Driving a vehicle is one of the few activities where we are still given full control to make bad choices and break shit. The geeks and nerds in Silicon Valley are working very hard to give us driverless cars. Someday the same geeks, along with some well-meaning SJWs will make it against the law to drive a vehicle yourself, as you might hurt someone.

Let’s all enjoy driving and breaking shit while we still can!

Agreed. I doubt he will be back though. He came here to get told he was 100% correct and have someone pat him on the ass and say it’s going to be ok. Instead he got questions and ran away. That’s what leads me to believe there is far more to the story that puts him in a bad light.
