In older single pane/wood sash windows like mine the plastic does slow air infiltration but it does look tacky lol
There are sweeps brushes and weatherstripping u can add to the older windows where there are leaky moving parts. that’s a lot of work lol. Also u mentioned cracked “caulk” around the window pane. That is probably “glazing” and you can replace it just make sure u use the right product lol. It comes in a tub and u roll it out like a play doh snake. There are metal spikes behind the glazing that hold the pane in. U can reuse or replace them

As far as energy efficiency vs cost goes, in the certifications I’ve earned (HERS/Energy Star and BPI) retrofit window salesmen/installers are referred to as “window bandits” by the instructors because the cost takes so long to be recouped thru energy savings.

Comfort is another matter lol. And the newer windows are definitely easier to clean/maintain.

When looking at LED's, ignore the "watt equivalent" it doesn't matter. Lumens, color, and actual wattage are all that would matter. Keep actual wattage below what your fixture is rated for. I have "200 watt equivalent" bulbs in my garage that are 36 watts. I have never even seen or heard of a 200w bulb.

I have that shrink wrap plastic on a few windows in my house too, it does help a little.

Trying to figure out what i can do to make accessing my master bedroom light switch easier with these double doors. We like having them open fully when were awake but want them closed at night. Its a real pain to open the door and walk into the room and behind the door to access the switch. Also note the switch is not operable currently as were installing a ceiling fan and can lights in the area so i will be making that a 2-3 gang box. Waiting to edge the trim paint until the gang box is in.

    Any ideas?

There are some smart home solutions out there. I just did some cool things with smartthing switches and samsung buttons. The single button sits on my night stand and can control my light, can lights, and fan. You could get one of those and stick it to your door jam.

i've thought about buying a different fan than i already purchased with a remote and placing the remote on the backside of the left door. So i can open the door and tap the remote to turn on the light in the fan which will be in the center of the room. Then if i want the can lights i can go hit the switch behind the door. At that point there will already be light in the room and not as awkward.

What is to the left as you come in the room? Looks like a hallway. Maybe put a two way switch there wired to the one inside then you can turn it off once inside but also can turn it on from the outside. Doesnt look like you have enough room for a switch to the right as you come in.

    Install a clapper?

Then you don’t have to get out of bed to turn the lights out.
    Solves two issues.

    A thing or two...
What about a motion activated switch? I'm not sure if the door opening would set it off, but if it doesn't it should just take a wave of the arm or walking farther into the room for it to see you.

cant, it is a master closet right next to the switch on the left and the door covers that gap between the master bedroom door and the master closet door.

its 1970s track home designing at its finest.

That is most likely the solution i will do. It just makes the most sense even with being a little odd to have your switch in the hall.

sometimes function overrides looks IMO...;) If theres a hallway light I'd put the two together in the same gang.

after fixing a lot of the wiring throughout the house, i would question if that person had any sense at all. Clearly had no idea wtf he was doing. Im just glad we were able to fix it and make it right.
