How many miles you got on it? I'm on my second 3rd gen and they both seemed to mellow out a lot after a few thousand miles, that and the TSB Toyota released for that specific problem helped a lot. Did you test drive it? I haven't owned that many vehicles but to me it works just fine on the Interstate. I'm really trying to understand this common complaint, do you and the others who have an issue with the transmission dislike it because you want better fuel economy or do you just not like that the transmission isn't doing what you want it to? With respect, I'm just wondering if these are legitimate complaints about an issue that I just so happen to not have a problem with or if people are being just a little silly because these trucks don't act exactly like other vehicles they like.

You didn't, I'm with you lol. I think it acts a little silly when using the adaptive cruise control where it's very hilly, but even that is hardly an issue.

I just want to publicly thank the Great Lakes area for taking on our cold weather. You got the vortex, we shot up 30 degrees. This is the warmest winter I can remember. Haven’t had a -20 day yet... super confused.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
    Bite me.

    (kidding!)

Left for work this morning it was -22F. Sun's out now though, and no wind to speak of. It's really not that bad. Supposed to snow yet again tonight (oh joy!).

To make this post 'Coma related: My first winter with it, so far I'm quite happy. It sat in the driveway for a couple of days (no way I was going out yesterday*). Groaned for that first second when cranking, then fired right up (up-sized the battery over the summer). Heats up quickly, windows defrost fast. Only weather-related quirk is that the viscosity of the clutch fluid went way up. I'd push down on the clutch pedal and take my foot off, after a second the pedal would pop back up. Even that went away after a few minutes of driving.

    * - new rule: if the USPS thinks it's too cold to deliver mail, then it's too cold for me to venture outside

lol right. We actually did get a foot of snow last week, thought I was going to get away with leaving the snowblower in the back shed.

Wife still works so mod time is when she’s at work and the garage is mine!

If your stock OVTune 1.05 tune will make you love your truck again! Or in love with it for the first time! Heavy modified trucks like myself are waitng for custom tunes to see all the benefits but its helped alot for now! Get it you wont regret it!

Nope, I just peeled the wax paper, applied the epoxy on them (also from Harbour freight), and wrapped them using painters tape to help keep them around the bars. Before gluing I made a few short straight line cuts where I have 90 degree bars coming from the sliders frame rails. I ended up using 6 rubber strips, 3 on each side.

They will likely get torn off in rough trails but my truck is a mall princess for now. If they get torn one day I will do the same but not wrap them around the bars as much, just on top.

Let me know if you want more close up photos.

Thanks! I was pretty stoked to find the SCS blemished thread and was able to get a set of 5, so I got a full-sized spare that I'll be doing 5 tire rotations with too!

I am guessing that driving habits, modifications, altitude, terrain, and weather conditions all have varying degree of impact. I am in FL, flat and pretty much sea level. I have a heavy foot. I am in a 2wd mostly stock Taco, modified exhaust and cosmetics only. No cap, rack, armor, heavy bumper(s) etc. so no real added weight.

    The common complaints are mostly:
    • The lack of low end, low RPM, power - This is a design of the high reving engine Hardware issue
    • Shift dance, truck seems to have trouble deciding which gear is right for current conditions. - This seems to be mostly software related
      • This is typically see in the highway with increased load demands such as hills, acceleration, wind, cargo
    • Delayed response, This one was a big issue for me - Again mostly if not all software
      • From a standstill turn left crossing 3 lanes of traffic, pedal goes down, nothing happens, start to get worried about oncoming traffic, mentally debate moving foot to brake, truck launches across traffic, now going 50+ you remove foot from skinny pedal, RPMs and speed continue to increase, brake hard because road is running out, after taking a few deep breaths to recover from your personal mini seizure you look around to see how many people are watching with gaped mouths thinking you are a jackass that does not know how to drive.
    • Stumbling and surging. - Again mostly if not all software
      • No change in pedal position but RPMs suddenly climb
      • Taking off from a stop during "normal" conditions and truck seems to pause for a breath

I had the TSB for the 50mph surge applied and all of the software issues are or seem improved, though not fixed completely. It is on the TSB thread, but if you have no issue you likely do not need it to be fixed.

This is just a synopsis of the drive-ability issues many have experienced. Since TW is filled with enthusiasts we tend to be more "in tune" to our trucks that the normies on the road and thus notice things or feel more of an impact from things that the common driver may not.

IMO this sums it up pretty good. Lots of things said like tranny and engine are junk. Nothing wrong with the engine or tranny. It’s all computer controlled by a human that programmed it. It’s all in the programming of it.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I have had 2 3rd gen pros, over the time of owning them. I kept up with all updates, and have driven mine on the fast side I would say. After the last TSB it most definitely gave it more pep, but I noticed it more so having better shift points. I spend a lot of time in city, Hwy and the mountains. These motors and trans just really like the higher rpms.
Before I was sad I let my 2nd gen go for this one, but now I am completely stoked. Does drive like a Porsche in comparison to my 2nd gen...well in my mind at least.

I’ve had my steel sliders for a few years now. I received them raw. My first coating was a few coats of primer + a couple coats of HD textured rattle can paint. After a year, they were chipped pretty good from gravel flying up from the tires. Then I had them sand blasted, bringing them to like brand new condition (which was great because they were tore up and rusting a bit over the raw steel). Then coated them with primer + a couple coats of Herculiner. Super solid product, but after several months, I can tell the gravel is chipping away at the coatings again.

I think my next attempt, after sand blasting them, will be to have them powder coated + Herculiner.

Added some grill lights yesterday. I think it looks great compared to the standard 3. And it’s not 100% raptor-esque lol.
