Not a Tacoma I know. My aunt has been driving a 2001 4Runner with the original 5VZ/A340E since it was at 30K. It's now at 417,205. All the work on it follows the recommended service schedule.

Bought my 2004 Taco DC with 172,000 in 2014. Promptly replaced timing belt and water pump at the same time. Oil & filter changes every 5,000 miles with full synthetic. Only thing that comes to mind is I replaced the fuel pump (in the gas tank), had the plugs and wires done once (I think they may be due again), and have had to do the brakes a few times (normal wear). Am at 269,000+ miles, still running well. Mine is a work truck.

Is that a Taco or a 4Runner? If a Taco, did you do any mods? Thought the 4WD pushbutton on the transfer case shift lever only came on 4Runners?

Mine is the same as in the picture (push button for 4 hi). My brother in laws 99 4runner doesn't have the push button so he has to shift into 4 hi).

My interior (you can barely see the 4wd button):

Don't think I have a pic of the interior of my BIL's 4runner though.

Now I am thoroughly confused. So if the 4WD button get's you "4HI", what happens....

Let me try again, a light bulb may have just gone off...

So you normally run around with the transfer case shift lever to the rear in the H position? (I was interpreting H as 4HI.) When you want 4HI (i.e. T-case high range, but power to front and rear), you push the magical 4WD button?

Moving the transfer case shift lever forward to 4LO then gets you Low range on the Transfer case?

Question: Can you shift the transfer case shift lever forward without depressing the 4WD button? Will that get you Low range, but 2WD (rear) only? Or does moving the transfer case shift lever forward automatically engage 4WD (i.e. power to the front axle)?

    You got it.

Your last question is a good one. Most of the time when I go into 4Lo, the 4WD button is already engaged/pushed in. I want to say that I have went into 4Lo without the 4WD button pushed in and it does exactly that...4WD Lo range regardless of 4WD button position.

If I have time tonight/this weekend I'll test it out to confirm further.

There's a fellow around here -- @bwawuz02 -- who has swapped a 4thgen T4R torsen, locking center diff transfer case into his 2nd gen Taco. I think he's working on adding A-TRAC now. And he's running TrueTracs front & rear. My baby is an '04 Taco DC TRD OR, and I think I just figured out that I might be able to swap a locking center diff transfer case from an '01-02 T4R into my truck, and probably also the TRAC-VCS system. So... I was just looking at a 4Runner thread today and other web pages that describe 3rd gen 4Runner transfer cases. I'm still swimming in the different options, but if memory serves, the 3rd gen T4R's had like 3 different kinds of transfer cases, and some had the exact same t-case shift lever as yours (@synergy10). My '04 Taco DC has a J-type t-case shift lever... so I was surprised to learn from you that apparently not all 1st gen Taco's have the J-type t-case shift lever.
