Thinking of getting a 19 OR

Few questions, had an 08 sport years ago and I have the itch for another taco.

1. What is in the tech package for the 19? Online it looks like blind spot stuff but other are mentioning heated seats and moonroof?

2. How is the dynamic radar cruise? I’ll be coming from a Subaru with eyesight (it’s awesome).

3. Are these tranny issues (auto) just a few people whining? Or is this a big issue?

4. Anyone got pics of the blackout package? Curious how it looks.

5. Looking at a few trucks with blackout, predator, tech package for around 35k +TTL. Good pricing? In Texas FYI.

6. How’s the power? Coming from a WRX so I know I’ll be slower. But having the ability to pass people would be nice.

 

Heated seats and moonroof are part of the Premium package. Basically Tech + Premium = loaded. I like the dynamic radar, works very well. I have a manual so I can't speak to the transmission concern.

 

I have 18 sport with tech + Premium, blackout, and auto. No transmission problem, and get 21/23 on hwy. No complaints.

 

The dynamic radar cruise will not be the same as the Subie eyesight system. Helps to keep your distance from the vehicle in front of you and disengages below 25 mph. There is nothing wrong with the auto transmission; it's works exactly as it's designed to.

 

1) Do not have so I cannot comment, but the limited I test drove had it and it was nice.
2) It works well and doesn't jar you like some others I have, its a gradual slow down which is nice. I really like it.
3) I don't have any transmission issues and I have an auto. It seems like its looking for the best gear to keep you as fuel efficient as possible, but I really like it.
4) See picture, also the "TACOMA" on the rear has black inserts (not just little stickers) and my tail pipe is a flat black
5) They can be found, I am also in TX.
6) I came from a 4Runner and its hands down a faster vehicle. I don't feel as if its a struggle to get on the highway at all.

 

I think the AT is hit or miss depending on MODs, driving style and luck. I have no heavy MODs or lift but drive with a heavy foot and have no issues. Others hate the AT.

Blackout just covers the two “Tacoma” on the doors and whatever yours has on the tailgate; V6, 4x4, SR5 etc. Any other chrome are something you will have to change on your own.

The cruise control is awesome, I personally love it. But I also love that it can be turned off or on based on the drivers choice.

WRX and Tacoma will be night and day in every way possible. Do not compare them or you will hate both.

Want to be happy? Test drive the actual truck you are getting. Do it both on and off the highway. Spend an hour and half a tank of gas if you have to. We can give our views but we all expect and want something a little different out of our driving experience.

He brings up a good point. The "Bling Ring" around the grill, it was not black. I bought the SR surround from my dealership for 85 bucks and installed it. I did not want to jack with painting, plastidip, or anything else that was going to take a beating from the front of the vehicle. I actually bought the TRD Pro Faux grill but changed it back to the cheese grater grill. Personally, the TRD Pro looks like the truck is puckering up to me. Also, everyone and their dog has it, so I went back. If that's the direction you want to go, hit me up.

 

Offroad with tech/premium JBl blah blah, Auto trans all is smooth with the shifting so far. Make sure you brake moderately during your test drive to make sure the drums/axle problem doesn't occur on that particular truck. my 2 cents.

I just got a 18 Tacoma TRD OR, also live in Texas. I have no idea how people are getting over 20 mpgs on their tacos. No matter how conservative I drive, I average about 17mpg. I haven't experienced any issues from the auto, this is the first truck I've had in over 20 years and the first auto (always get hatchbacks cars with manual transmission) so I might not be as sensitive to the auto trans issues most report.

I love the truck, three months in, and the only two (small) issues I've had so far have been the (1) mileage is lower than I expected and (2) the issue with vibration during braking. It's been discussed here on TW if you'd like to do a search but the vibration is very subtle and usually happens when braking between 30 to 20 mph. It's not a big deal but it's definitely there and noticeable (if your taco is affected). There's a service bulletin out for it (TSB 00023-18 I think) and it might depend on your local service station to see if they will do anything to fix it. Mines at the shop now and going through the procedures of diagnosing it. A test drive by the tech resulted in him telling me he feels it but thinks its road vibration. Wasn't until I took in the TSB notice that they took it a little more seriously and are actually taking measurements now to see if it's within specs. I should know more in the next day or two. The tech did tell me that no one had been in for this issue, that most of the service issues he's seen were involving the surging complaint with the transmission. I haven't experienced this with my taco.

The mileage issue isn't that big of a deal to me, I expected poor mpg because it's a truck. I just expected a little better because of the advertise rating of 18 city and 22 highway. Mine's getting about 17 with a 50/50 split of city and highway miles.

As for power, it does have passing power but coming from any sporty car it won't be the same. Imagine passing a car in a high gear in your sporty car and that might be a good way to describe it, at least in my experience. Pushing the ETC PWR button does help keeping the revs higher and results in better acceleration.

Best advice is to test drive one, be sure to try out the ETC PWR button during your drive and find a nice straight flat street where you can safely brake between 40 to 10 to see if you feel any vibration in the brakes.

 

Coming from an '07 and picking up my '19 OR this weekend. Can't speak to the auto since mine is and will be manual. The Tech package wasn't much of a draw for me, but I am getting the Premium package (leather, heated, sunroof, etc...) and Premiums seem to always come with Tech. Power is up, but you really need to put your foot into it and get to higher RPMs to appreciate it over the Gen 2.

 

Man, I'm getting way lower mileage. What speed do you average? I'm curious because we have some fast speed limits in TX and mine is bad

 

Trust me, they aren’t getting 23mpg at 80mph.

 

60 to 65mph two lane, average 22/23, have pulled 24. WI/Upper MI That's mostly Hwy trips to cabin. 250 miles one way.

Your right, no road/Hwy around here are that, speed limit 70 the highest speed limit, 20/22 on them. If I keep it at 70 to 72.

Always love it when somebody complains about fuel mileage driving 80 or more.

If you're really interested in one of these trucks, ask for an extended test drive. The trucks drive fine on flat ground but going up any kind of incline they really do not hold gears well. You have to have a heavy foot or put it in S mode. I find it gets up to speed then shifts up and cant hold speed...so it slows down then you gas it and it downshifts to get up to speed and repeat...

That being said I still love my truck but there are some quirks some people don't mind them... some hate em.
