Remember, get a standard size 51 ohm resistor if you can, instead of re using the factory one. a lot of guys (myself included) re soldered the factory ones back in, only to have them fail a few months later.

I'm at about a year and a half since I did it with the full size resistors, and it's still going.

Yes, I was just reading that section wondering where to get the exact OEM 51 resistor....

Radio Shack. Oh wait, they're gone. See if you have an electronics store in your area. The kind of place that sells electronic science projects and 47uf capacitors. If not, see if there's an old school TV repair place near you.

Arrow is an online-only electronics store that ships for free, and great prices even! https://www.arrow.com/

As for the Rat Shak line.... well not really. https://www.radioshack.com/
    They actually do still exist.

The name has been gone forever (in Canada), but they were never actually here to begin with. They were actually just leasing the name to a Canadian company. The deal expired and was never renewed, so the Canadian company kept going under the name "the source". https://www.thesource.ca/
    Yeah, they also still exist.

You don't really want the OEM version, a standard size 51 ohm 1/4 watt resistor is what others (myself included) have used with success.

    Like these:
    https://www.amazon.com/Resistors-Oh...id=1548965789&sr=1-8&keywords=51+ohm+resistor

As far as I know, the problem isn't so much the resistor itself (my factory resistor ohm'd out @ 51 ohms, so it wasn't defective), as much as it is inferior solder (I've read)/ the fact that the standard size resistors give you so much more surface area to solder to, over the tiny factory ones that presumably are soldered by robots.

Thank you kindly. This will be my first time soldering anything (I'm sure he will want to show me how it's done) but hoping it goes well!

    ChadsPride,
    Everything Fitz235 said is spot-on.

A few words of wisdom: you will be happier with a decent iron, and they are inexpensive. Get a Weller or Hakko instead of the cheap Harbor Freight ones....the metals used in the tip are far superior. The tip will tin out much better, and last longer. Soldering irons are one of those tools where the end result is better when you have a good one.

-51 ohm axial lead resistors are what you are looking for (edit: Fitz235 links to them above); 47 ohm will work fine too (the display will be slightly brighter).

-Try to work quickly and efficiently, too much heat for too long can cause the solder pads to lift from the board...and when that happens, you will be sending it to me to fix. :)

-Most importantly...*before you power the board back up*....grab a magnifying glass and make sure you don't have any solder bridges. There is a small circular solder pad near the resistors, and if you bridge to that pad and power it....poof, there goes your board. I can't fix it, either...Toyota won't sell me the proprietary chip.

I agree about getting a Weller or Hako. You definitely want one that has replaceable tips. The really cheap soldering irons have a tip that is not removeable or is held in with a set screw. The other giveaway is the cord. If it has a nice round cord and a 3 prong plug, it's a nice one. If it looks like a lamp cord with a 2 prong plug, it's a cheap one. The solder station ones are nice with a separate box, but you don't need that good of one. Also, you want really small diameter rosin core solder. I don't know the dimension. I just look at it and grab the one that looks right.

Uh, no. However, that is the soldering gun type that you use for soldering wires together on your truck.

Ha, yep....I highly recommend getting a pencil style iron, you will have a very difficult time with the pistol grip. As Muddinfun said above, that type of iron is for non-electronic type of work...connecting wires, craft soldering, etc. The tips are usually too large for fine work, and you don't have as much control.

For $4, you'd be better off to just order the Amazon ones. You'll likely get them before you'd get one from me. Especially if you have Prime.
