Leaking Leer Shell

I have an 01 tacoma with a leer shell that I bought a few months ago. The shell leaks pretty bad, like puddles of sitting water in the corners of the bed. The cap was installed when the truck was purchased in 01 so I figured the rubber stripping was dry rotted. I replaced the weather stripping with a double bulb stripping thinking that would fix the issue. Along with using a silicone to seal the corners.

It didn't. Im almost positive the shell is not leaking through the windows since the cloth liner of the shell is not wet below the windows.


The majority of the water seems to be dripping from the corners, on the shell's lip and the lip is only wet on the bottom side that faces the bed.


The underside of the shell is pretty eroded and there is a large divot, not sure if that is causing the issue?

Also the shell site inside the bed rails about 1/8th inch on both sides.



Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

I would take it to a dealer. I've always had positive experiences and only been charged for weather stripping once.

 

What did you replace it with?

That is a good seal. Extruded Solutions makes the best imo. I think where you may be running into an issue is the placement of the seal. the super cap seal shouldn't be visible. It may be a case of placing it to far outboard. When applying the seal, have the inboard edge of the seal right up against the side where the liner is - or at least very close with just a slight bit of space.

The seal should also have come with some putty to use up on the front rail or anywhere there is a gap. I have an under the rail liner and there was a slight height difference because of it so I use a little of the putty there. The underside of my cap had a few spots where the fiberglass was uneven (similar to what you described on yours but on a much smaller scale) - the putty filled in the areas where I had an issue.

Finally, don't torque those clamps down - I can't recall the actual torque for them but its some ridiculously low amount. I just snugged them up and then gave them a couple of extra turns. The first time I put the cap back on, I had them torqued pretty good - yep, it leaked. lol

My buddy is having the same problem. Clamps all on and extra silicon still leaks

 

I used this and now my shell has no leaks. I used to get massive puddles

 

I forgot to do that on mine but there was no issue. I had to use the thick seal and the thinner one for the front rail

 

Looks like the leaking is from one of the front corners, which is where mine is also leaking. It probably needs to be repositioned a tad forward and throw a new seal on, as mentioned. Before I messed with mine and broke the seal, I fixed that corner issue with some clear rv caulk.
