Hey guys! So i'm a first time Taco owner here! [TRD Sport - 4dr - Automatic]
I'm having this strange issue with my brand new truck (just crossed over 1000 miles).

When I start the engine and immediately put it in drive or reverse it idles around 1200rpm and my car gets moving to about 5 - 7mph without ever touching the throttle, even on completely flat ground. However after a few mins of driving when I come to a red light it sits at a normal 500rpm and the truck sits still.

Also separately, when I'm driving over 40-60mph and I release the throttle to start coming to a slow down, the rpm's decline and reach about 1000 i can feel the truck downshift and it slows the truck down dramatically all of the sudden. Feels almost like there the TSS system kicks in and is slightly putting the breaks on for me..its a very unusual feeling.

Anyone else have strange things happening like this?
    Thanks in advance!

when you cold start your truck it is programmed to run hot and fast quickly for emission standards , try waiting 15 seconds or so after cranking before putting it in gear . If you have the radio off you can actually hear when the fan slows down and it begins to idle normally.

What you are feeling on deceleration sounds like normal engine braking.

What were you driving before this out of curiosity?

Thanks for your reply! It seems to do this same thing even when I give the engine ample time to warm up (1 to 2 mins). But strange enough, this issue seems to be intermittent.. sometimes it acts "normal" and remains at around 500rpm when I put it in Drive and waits for me to put my foot on the accelerator. It's about 50/50

Before this, I was driving our family car...Toyota Prius 2008. Completely new experience haha So, maybe i'm just not used to a "real" engine yet :)

Yep.. my Lexus is350 does exactly the same thing on start up when cold. Starts at 1000 rpm and holds it for either a few seconds or until you drop it in gear. Same basic engine as the truck (2GR)

Depending on how cold it was, 1-2 minutes isn't going to drop the idle much lower, from what I've experienced. The downshifting and pulling is normal too, as @SaulGoodman mentioned, it's engine braking.

Cool, most likely it's that you're not familiar with this type of drivetrain.

In a Prius the front wheels receive power from the transmission mounted close by; The torque it receives is barely enough to move the vehicle.

Your new truck sends power through the transmission and down the driveshaft to the rear differential. When putting it in gear you will notice more noises in general and maybe even a small "clink" or "clang. This is usually nothing to be alarmed with as there are more moving parts in the drivetrain that begin to be loaded with torque.

Try placing it in reverse will your foot fully depressed , wait two seconds then let off the brake to reverse. That may help you not overload the drivetrain with cold engine rpms.

In short: The torque-less engine of the Prius combined with the CVT transmission which has no gears didn't move you, the truck will because it's more powerful and RWD/4x4. If you drove a solid axle mustang you would experience the same drivetrain system as your truck so it's not limited to trucks.

Exactly also RWD, basically this is your first RWD vehicle.

I was taught years ago to never start up and go. Let the engine warm up for a minute. You’ll see the rpms drop when it’s ready. I’ve done this for 30 years.
