Hey Guys. I have a 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 with the V6. I have noticed that when idling and I don't have the radio turned up, I hear the Engine Ticking that others on this Forum have discussed. I have always used Mobil1 full synthetic in my vehicles and run 0w-20 in this one. I'm wondering if anyone has used Penzoil Platinum, Castrol, or some other Full Synthetic 0w-20 and has not had the engine tick? Thanks very much.

High pressure fuel pump ticks. No oil brand fixes it. It should tick not "chirp".

three generations of Tacoma... three generations of ticking motors. don't let it bother you, it means the gerbils under the bonnet are doing their thing.

Toyota has notoriously loud valve noise as well, but I'm assuming OP is hearing the HPFP

Yeah it will tick and tick. There is in fact a TSB for a "chirp" though. As crazy as that sounds there is a difference in the specific sound the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) will make. Tick is ok but a high pitch "chirp" is not.

My truck runs great. This is my third Tacoma. My other two did not tick like this. Just thought it may be the oil.

Just saying it could also be the valves going through their cleaning cycle. Sounds like an engine tick/knock but only does it at idle and only from time to time

The obvious ticking that comes and goes at hot idle is the direct injection cleaning cycle. It's supposed to do that, and no changes in the oil you use will get rid of it.

After 300k or 400k thousand trouble free miles, you will enjoy the ticking!

Just for the heck of it, I replaced the Mobil1 0w20 with Pennzoil 0w-20 about 500 miles ago. I have always used Mobil1 in all of my vehicles for years but my engine seams to idle much quieter and smoother with the Pennzoil. Anyone else running Pennzoil? Thanks

My Lexus IS350 with the same 2gr motor does this as well. It’s nothing to worry about and just a characteristic of it.

Are you running Pennzoil or Mobil 1? I'm not worried at all. This is my 3rd Tacoma. Just curious what others are using Thanks.

Ticking is from the fuel pump and/or injectors...has nothing to do with oil.

Try a high octane fuel and a bottle of Techron...but not worth the extra $ imo.

No, but I used mobile 1 for my first oil change (changed at 1k) and it seemed noisier than the Toyota oil.

I use Amsoil Sig. series. I can get it at an Ace Hardware 2 miles from the house at $12 a quart. Don’t get me wrong it’s not cheap but I don’t hit 10k a year on any of our cars so once a year oil changes in our house. New Taco has 2k now so it hasn’t had its change yet but it’ll get amsoil too.

My wife’s daily driver is an 05 accord that was mine since new, 130K and 14 years on the clock, Amsoil since change number 1. Lost a head gasket last year but otherwise a flawless car. The 4cyl in it has a known issue with them at about 120k and sure enough at 123k there it went. Very reputable local Honda/Toyota shop did the work and the mechanic asked when I picked it up “use amsoil in this don’t you? I said yes and he said it’s obvious, the heads were spotless and the cylinder walls looked beautiful when he took it off. Probably use it forever now.

I used to swear by amsoil in my boosted car but realistically it may have just been the placebo effect. I use valvoline synthetic and change at 5k, no idea why but since it's only $5-$10 more per oil change I figure it's worth it.
