RAW is basically caputuring full data and utlizing the sensor to it's fullest at the expense of storage. But it is well worth it.

The photos will look more flat direct off the camera so software is needed to extract the colors from it. But because it captured more information you can extract more detail and color from it.

Lightroom is even a mobile app so you could do this all wirelessly with your camera and phone if you wanted.

Starting to watch some Lightroom videos on Youtube. It's making me really want to buy it...

I've only been using the free Nikon editing software for the longest time but it might be time to upgrade.

Which one do you use? I didn't realize there were different versions of it, i.e. classic versus cloud-based. Also sucks that it's $10 a month instead of a flat cost up front.

    Bummer. That sucks.

Edit some photos, it'll make you feel better :p

I have an older version so I paid 80 bucks and was done.

Either way I'd go for classic. Not a fan of an all cloud based system

I'm trying the 7 day free trial of the new Lightroom. From what I understand it's a better start for beginners, so we'll see!

I got the free version for my phone, I like it, I don’t know what paying for it would give me exactly and that’s fine with me, for now.
Just messing around with it, don’t really know what I’m doing.

I'm messing with it on some of my favorite photos. It's a lot easier to pull out what the colors actually looked like in real life compared to the other software I've been using.

Yea for sure, loads better than what my regular iPhone editing is capable of. Thanks to @Blackdawg for recommending it.

Excited to see how it pairs without new camera.

Just wait till you shoot raw. You'd be amazed what photos you can make look good that initially look bad.

    So true.

Just as an example - here's a RAW and then the post-process of a photo from the recent F.U.Rain trip.

You can see how the lighting conditions were such that the sky was really bright and so to not wash it out, I had to shoot the shot really dark. Black almost. But then post-processing, you can pull all those colors back in, so you get a pretty nice (albeit somewhat warped due to the wide angle) shot of the trucks in front of the lookout).

You can really only do this with RAW and something like Lightroom - you'd never be able to recover this in a JPG that is taken and processed, even on the same camera. I definitely recommend the Lightroom subscription (unless you already have an old version of Lightroom Classic - ver. 5 or 6), even though it's $120/yr, since in the end, the results are amazing.

This is also making me want to get a lens that is better suited for the landscape photos I typically take, as all I've ever used is the 18-55mm lens that came with my camera. But I don't want to break the bank either...
