I just want enough low end torque to idle up hills.

 

Twin turbo or supercharged v6 option with a solid trans would be a solid move on Toyota’s part. That would get me thinking about dropping my 2nd gen for it.

 

That is the million dollar question, but it will be a clean slate new dynamic force engine I am sure. Details should trickle out as the new Tundra approaches next year.

 

How about an 8250 redline 5.2 voodoo with an FPC and max torque around 4700 RPMs ? Might be a bit too high, eh?

 

If most people do what you do with their Tacoma's, what you stated would be an agenda for Toyota. Sadly, TacomaWorld is a small niche in the overall sales of the Tacoma.

Given this refresh, I doubt we will see any changes to the motor. Some people here are completely delusional with their expectations....Especially when the market trend is heading towards hybrid to full electric. I'm sure Toyota is developing a diesel engine to put in the 4th gen Tacoma coming out in 2022 to please TW.

 

So I actually talked to a Toyota insider (my uncle works at the Texas facility) and he said a few things that were interesting. First, he neither confirmed nor denied a diesel. He said "Toyota loves to surprise us with things out of the blue" and then talked about hydrogen engines.

Finally, he said the Atkins motor really should never be paired with an AT. He said an AT just works counter to all the engines strengths. As an MT fan, I found that to be an interesting tidbit.

Personally, I'm really intrigued by the Dynamic Force motors. 40+% thermal efficiency and more torques!?! Yes, please! But would that also mean the end of the MT? I hope not.

 

I get that, i just don't think diesel in the tacoma is the answer. Tundra makes more sense.

I'd love a diesel but don't expect it. I do however expect a larger displacement motor with a lower rpm torque curve and an 8 speed trans. No reason a truck this size can't get 25mpg.

 

BMW motors in Tacomas.... what happened?

I’ve owned and driven 2 2nd gens and now a 3rd gen and I think it’s fine. The mpg I will give ya. The sup par performance I can’t agree with totally. The truck overall isn’t fast but neither is the 2nd. Should it be more efficient? Yes. Could it be more powerful? Yes. But it isn’t technically sup par compared to a 2nd gen in those same categories coming from owning one.

 

Compare it to Ford and Chevy....

 

Definitely deficiencies between us and them, but also look at their reliability, customer satisfactorion, and sales. Toyota is far superior in most categories except keeping up with the times.

 

Absolutely.
Despite all our perceived deficiencies, according to IHS, the Tacoma is #1 in brand loyalty in the mid size pickup category. So there are factors other than the latest and greatest advances driving people's choices.
For me, it was my overall satisfaction with the reliability of my Toyota cars, SUVs, and trucks that I have or do still own. 11 vehicles total since 1971. 8 were purchased new and the only new vehicle that I had an "issue "with was a 1975 Corolla that had a tail light bulb and a rear turn signal bulb in the wrong sockets. (I switched them myself)
I never had to take a new vehicle back to the dealer with a problem. Try that with a Ford, Chevy, or Ram.

 

I thought the Atkinson cycle engines were mainly designed for Hybrid use, and I think for our trucks it's not truly Atkinson.

 

That low end torque and headroom in the Ranger is glorious! I'm glad I had the opportunity to test drive one a few months ago. It actually felt like driving a proper truck.

 

Competitors have greatly improved in the past decade.
