I have an Ecobee thermostat which is pretty smart and allows me to see, through a web site, my different heat stages and cycles. I can see how often and long the Aux heat kicks on. Does your smart thermostat have that feature. If so, you should check to make sure Aux is actually kicking on occasionally. Mine looks like this.

I have it set right now so the Aux doesn't come on. I didn't want it on. I would rather maintain a comfortable temp with only a 10 degree swing. I read that with a heat pump, in the long run it is more economical to never use Aux heat at all.

During the work week, our max temp in the winter is 67 degrees, and that's only from from 8 to 10 pm, then it drops to 65 for sleeping. At 0630 when we wake up, it drops to 60 (Mainly because at normal outside temps in full sun the house will heat up to around 63 degrees anyway). Then I have the schedule set to step up to 61 at 10 am, then a degree every 2 hours to 1830 at 66 degrees.

So far this has worked perfectly. Until the temps dropped to under 20, but when it got to zero the other day it was freaking out. Maybe I need to readjust the lockout and let the Aux come back on, but I still feel like if it can maintain at the current setup that will save money.

I just find it odd that I didn't have this issue with the older, less smart thermostat.

Ok, this just a abbreviated history

    Screenshot_20190201-154352_Nest.jpg

The darker orange are the aux heat instances. See how it was fine this Mon, Tues, and even Wed during the day, then it went bonkers. Even if you look at the previous week you see on Wed it never came on once during the day.

So maybe because it knows the outside temp it wants to control it more, and with Aux even though jack shit was happening. I mean if it was doing that and the inside temp was going up I would never have questioned anything but since it was 62 degrees I was like WTF!?

Just got to the cabin. Fired up the woodburner & turned the furnace up a bit. A group of us is getting the sxs's & snowmobiles out for a night ride tonight. Should be fun.
