Hoping this will drive the 2019 pricing down or more discounts? I keep going back and forth with this and the new Ranger (which IMO does a lot of things better than the aging Taco). Just when I think of settling with the Ranger FX4, I see a 3rd gen OR on the road with TRD tires and I'm back here ..lol.

But other than the slightly redesigned headlights, the rest of the body/engine still is the same, right? Probably too early to tell.

I think that this site is a haven for complaints about our trucks and issues. But... If you didn’t have a Tacoma what would you get. I mean seriously...

Plenty of people get rid of their truck for 4 Runners. Great vehicle right? Sure. But the first time you need to load firewood or haul something big or tall... Bet you wish you had a truck.

Our truck has quirks. All vehicles do. If someone can find a truck as badass and capable as the Taco with no issues... Let me know so I can buy it!

The 2GD-FTV diesel in the Hilux is a great motor.

The 5.7 is lacking a number of the technologies that Toyota has available on other NA engines. Such as updated VVTI, D-4S and Dymanic Force (high thermal efficiency). Which if these technologies are on the 5.0 it would have similar or improved performance over the current 5.7.

    Ford F-150 5.0L V8:
    395 hp @ 5,750 rpm
    400 lb-ft @ 3,850 rpm

    Toyota 5.7L V8:
    381 hp @ 5600 rpm
    401 lb.-ft. @ 3600 rpm

So very comparable hp and torque output at similar RPMs. And I believe Toyota has better technology to add to the 5.0 to get even more output and mpg.

Therefore I don’t believe a 5.0L would need to be high reving to produce a good output compared to the current 5.7L.

a lot of people think Toyota will update the 5.7 with current technologies. That should have been done by now but thats a different story.

I expect some leaked images images of the 2020 Tacoma to surface a day or two before CAS. Seems common for automakers to do that. Maybe so ambitious press members dont try to sneak shots as they're loading them into the convention area or something like that. I think only a day or two before the gen 3 unveil there were high quality leaked images of the gen 3 Tacoma circulating the internet.

Yeah, but unfortunately it'll likely not meet US EPA / 50 state without a ton of extra crap that'll kill it's fun.

Without making things political, I'd have thought our ridiculous emissions standards would have been rolled back. We have stricter standards than the rest of the world yet get attacked for how much pollution we cause?

I don't disagree with you but it also makes about 150 hp. My 19 year old jeep makes more than that. Won't pan out well here in the states. If anything it will probably make even less than 150hp with all the restrictions crap.

I wish that all the technology that was put into the 3.5, they did to the 4.0.

    The 2.8 Duramax makes
    Horsepower: 181 hp (135 kW) @ 3400 rpm
    Torque: 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) @ 2000 rpm

Horsepower is unimportant on a diesel.

It's still important but i know diesels are known for the torque. You need a good balance of both.

And from videos i have looked at the diesel in the colorado is a dog

Well, it makes the same power as my 1.9L TDI with chips and stuff, fwiw. Which shows you how conservatively Toyota tuned it.

The 3.5 isn’t a problem so much as the tall gearing and ridiculous shift logic in the automatic. Properly tune the 3.5 and it’s just fine but they shit the bed on that in the Tacoma.

I have driven one and if it had been engineered by Toyota I would have bought. Not fast off the line, but the torque could keep you moving very well and an aftermarket tune that is available can wake them up.

Fingers crossed Toyota keeps the headlamp shape the same between refreshes. I'm sure the upgrade to OEM LED will not be cheap, but it will be the solution to quality headlamps in these trucks without having the issues being seen with the current lamps and HID (bounce) and LED (crummy output).

I just hope they don't price them as high as the Pro units.
