Feeler thread is up in the BST for 2nd gens now. Will see if anyone will trade, and I'm going to call ECGS tomorrow and see if I can exchange them. I want to see if they can assemble the 3rds too, that way I won't have to pay a driveline shop $1700 to install them, which is what I was quoted last.

It's the long distances that concerns me. I drove to Phoenix to visit my sister and grand canyon this past September and I like to drive 70-75 and the total distance I drove was 1,600+ miles. So I think 4.56 is better for my usecase, and I'll still have 4lo for rocks.

Thanks man, I'll send you a PM later this evening to talk about that install. I'm in Mira Loma, so 45 min drive.

I can do your install but @AssBurns is significantly closer to you so I'd stick with that plan.

IMO you need to figure out what you want to do with your truck and build it accordingly. If you're planning on going 35s soon, I'd gamble on 4:88s. If you are content with 33"s, then you'll be happy with 4:56s. Also, as mentioned it depends on the type of driving you do.

I won't tell you how to build your truck but it does sound like you're expecting a lot out of it for a DD. Same goes with bypasses in general. Those aren't the most ideal for all trucks.

Yeahhh, I think the most I'll ever go are 34s. My falkens have a lot of life left so that's not anytime soon. I originally wanted to take on the harder trails you guys like to go do, but then I realized I love taking trips and seeing new places when I'm not wheeling, so my use case changed. Luckily, race trucks can still wheel pretty well.

Oh believe me, I've done a lot of planning and research, those bypasses were bought to make sure the rear will be able to keep up with the front after I'm done with it.

If it's your DD you do not want to play on the harder trails. I break something almost every time I go out. My rig was my wife's DD before I took it over. I ended up having to buy her a 2009 4Runner to make up for the error of my ways. I love hard wheeling and I don't mind breaking stuff. I also have another DD so my rig can sit in the garage as long as I need it to. lol

Yeah my rear's the 8.4 non-elocker so no, it wouldn't fit unfortunately.

You sound like a good candidate for an economical DD. Why go through this angst & compromising when a little 4 banger DD will let you do whatever with the Taco?

So you should probably not be building a "race truck."

Hahaha. The difference in 4.56 and 4.88 is so minor. The difference in gas mileage would most likely be nothing. Who cares about saving 1-2 mpg anyways.

Long term. 2+ mid travel is the goal. SUA in the back.

Blowing $400 a month on gas, plus untold wear & tear is significantly more expensive than a little commuter car getting 30+ mpg :notsure:

I understand, but I also don’t have a place to park this commuter car. I ain’t stupid. Commuter car has been ruled out. I’m just trying to optimize my tacoma. Since this is a tacoma forum, that’s what I asked your opinion for. Otherwise I’d have bought one of those cute Scion FR-Ss I see everywhere

After reverting my old truck back to stock, it looked really funny and alignment was not great riding at 3 inches and stock wheels and tires. I'm just going to exchange the 4.88s for 4.56, shouldn't be a big deal since it's all still in the boxes. I'll get a bit more value from them and it'll still be much easier off the stop lights with the 33s. Thanks everyone for the feedback. Look forward to running some trails real soon. I'm looking to do a sierra nevada trip week ending the 23rd of Feb. Hopefully everything will be installed by then. :hattip:

Same wheels/tires I had on my PreRunner, which was just on 5100s back then. I clean swapped the 16” SCS ray10s and 285/75s falken wildpeaks on to my new truck back in May. My PreRunner was getting 17 mpg on 33s and stock gears, granted it wasn’t armored.

I forgot about parking :bananadead: I say 4.56 as long as you don't lose a good chunk of time/money working on that exchange, trade, sale, whatever. I wouldn't personally go through hell or hassle for the 7% difference. But what do I know, I've dumped too much into a prerunner to be taken seriously

Anyone interested in a day trip to Big Bear tomorrow?

I’m currently at KOH so I thought it would be cool to climb the mountain from the North side and into town. I’m solo and don’t have a winch so at least another truck would be cool.
