Considered buying another one? No. The Inchworm housing will be holding the 4.7s when they get here tomorrow. Even though the housing is 11/12 years old, it's still in perfect condition.

 

I didn't know if that housing needed clearancing
I had been looking at the advanced adapters, because I didn't know what other options there were?

I can clearance the housing if I need to, but for all I know, I won't have too. There's definitely a good amount of round around the stock 2.28 gears I have in the crawler right now, but I'll have a better understanding when I get the chance to install the gears.

If you're just looking at housings, then Advanced Adapters is the only one I know of who sell them, but I haven't done much reading into them. I know that Marlin Crawler manufacture their housing to clear 4.7s, but you can't buy just the housing from them as far as I'm aware.

I'm very interested in seeing how their new setup works out for highway travel and faster speeds. Definitely a product worth watching.

 

Definitely! I'm very interested in seeing what people have to say about it over the current available options. Hopefully a good reception with the 2nd/3rd Gen Tacomas means expansion into other platforms. I'll be hoping for a 1st gen Taco option later on down the road!

 

I'd love to have that option too. I want to go LT eventually and the Marlin stuff would be ideal for me and the type of wheeling I like to do. I don't care about going fast and doing jumps, I want slow crawl articulation performance.

 

If a first gen kit becomes available, I'd love to put the kit in my truck, but a big part of it comes down to price for me. If it comes down to being similar, or not much more to build a Dana 60, I won't bother with LT. I'll just keep saving for tons and 40s.

 

Yeah, price will definitely be a factor. But it also comes down to the amount of labor for either swap and how much of it you are actually capable of doing yourself. Not everyone can weld or weld well enough to install all the parts need for SAS. LT is basically a parts swap so labor wise would be easier and possibly more affordable to comeplete.

 

It won't surprise me if the whole kit costs North of $6k...

 

That definitely is a factor. I definitely do know how to weld, but not well enough for SAS.

I've seen a lot of the super crazy and beefy LT kits for full size truck start at $5K. Michael said the MarRack would be an optional add on. I wouldn't be surprised if all together the kit was somewhere between $6/8k.

Alrighty. Crawl Box Update:

Since the last update, quite a lot has been done. So let's start from where we left off. One of the more immediate things that I got done after the last update was a shift boot cover.

My mom and I brainstormed for a few days on what to do and this is what eventually landed on. Basically took two of the pieces from the original shifter boot cover and divided it into thirds so everything would fit properly. Worked out pretty well.

Big thanks to my mom for helping out with the pretty much all the sowing. I'm basically clueless when it comes to working with fabric. On the topic of shifters, the triple stick boot came in around the same time this was being made.

As for electrical work, grey wire mod is done.

Super easy and straightforward. Now I can use my locker without having to have the transfer case in 4Lo.

I also wired my ADD to switch. Might eventually pull everything ADD out of the front end and go full manual up front, but that's for later down the line should I choose so.

Got a seal extension for the transmission.

My 4.7 gears also came in. I did have to clearance the housing for the gear, no big deal though. It may look like I took off a lot, but it really isn't that much. At most I took about a 1/16" of material off. I did have to clearance the shift fork as well, but not much. I should also mention that I swap the shift rod that was in the crawler originally for the one that was in the old lefty. Made a HUGE difference with shifting.

The last thing I had to order was some FK Rod Ends for the shifters. Also paired the new rod ends with some stainless steel all thread and hardware. Linkage is solid and shifts smoothly.

Plan for tomorrow is start ripping apart the interior, pull the front drive shaft out and unbolt my belly skid crossmember. My brother currently has his 4Runner in the garage so if he's able to pull his 4Runner out tomorrow, then I'll put my Tacoma in the garage and start ripping the stock t-case out. Though, I told him to take his time so more likely I'll start Saturday.

Next time I update this thread, the truck will be rolling again and put back together ready for adventure! I have a buddy who want to go snow wheeling on the 17th so that's the goal currently.

 

I so want a crawl box. Eventually it will happen.

 

Save those pennies! It's definitely one of the best mods you can do if you like wheeling anything technical.
