Front Diff Vibes ECGS bushing fix.

The bushing is longer than the needle bearing, it should stick it out more.

 

Maybe we can get a tool pass-along thread. Make it x amount, send payment and keep passing it to the next person.

Has anyone found a place that doesn't rape on shipping? It's like $20. I'm sour about it. Anyone have a local shop with them in stock?

 

It needs to be FLUSH to 1/32 deeper (.032) max, yes the ECGS bushing is longer but that's ok ALL the instructions say to make it flush or just a little deeper,

if it is out to far maybe the CV shaft is riding on the end ?

Mine sticks out about ~1/16", so far so good.

 

Just installed the ECGS bushing in my Tacoma yesterday. Has anyone ever noticed a light hum or howl noise afterward? My Tacoma is not lifted at all yet, but will be very soon, so I was just being proactive. I'm not sure if the sound I'm hearing is even related to swapping the needle bearing out for the bushing though. Of course I'm extra paranoid after doing the install. I was very careful not to screw anything up. Double checked that the bushing was flush in the housing and not sticking out at all. I've always had the howling sound around 50-60 mph, especially in the wind. This seems like a different sound, but maybe its just the usual howl since its really windy today. The noise does not change at all whether I'm in 2wd or 4wd.

 

Ok, so I figured out the howling sound. Just wanted to update this in case someone else ever has this happen. I took the skid plate off in order to gain easier access to the diff side of the axle. I left the skid plate off for a couple days so I could have easy access to look and make sure the axle seal wasn't leaking. Apparently that causes some weird wind noises. Reinstalled the skid plate today, and like magic, no more howl.

 

Quick question.. is the needle bearing only in the 4WDs or both 4WD and 2WD??

The needle bearing is in the front differential.

I guess my real question is if I have a 2WD do I need to replace my needle bearing?

 

If your 2WD has a front differential then you should replace the needle bearing in it.

If i bring the bushing to my mechanic to get it installed do i have to buy the removal tool also? Or do most mechanics have a tool they use for that kind of stuff?

 

Buy the tool....and most of the time it needs a little grinding to make the access easier.

Installed some Bilstein 6112 at the 1in setting and instantly had the knobby vibration. I can't feel it, but I can definitely hear it. Will be following this Youtube video as soon as the part and tool comes in. Really considering just taking it to my mechanic but wouldn't mind saving the few hundred bucks either.

So funny story. Friday I stopped at the dealer to get my oil changed since it’s 5 degrees outside and sleeting, I wasn’t doing it. I mentioned that my truck has a intermittent cylindrical groaning noise, knowing it was my needle bearing but hopeful to see if they would replace it. I mentioned it’s definitely drivetrain related, and the noise goes completely away when I turn 4WD on. They said they would look at it and let me know, yada yada, didn’t think they would go further than that.

When my truck was ready, the went over the evaluation of the truck and my complaint. I might be late to this party, but turns out there’s a TSB out for this exact issue. It’s probably mentioned in previous comments on this thread, but I had to share. Anyway, they told me they ordered the front differential and parts, and would call me when it came in. They’re replacing my front diff?? Completely caught off guard, I say okay let’s see if this will fix it. Can’t hurt right?

So today (Tuesday) I get a call that the part is in, and to drop my truck off tonight when they will fix it tomorrow first thing. I’m interested to see the outcome. I’ll keep everyone posted. Mind you, my truck is lifted 3” and they’ve always bitched about warranty work if any because of it. I’ve attached a copy of the TSB they went off of.
