the only time i've regretted getting a reg cab over an access cab was when it was time to put sounds in my truck. i had to find a hella expensive sub to do the job of a regular one.

plus, with the regular cab, you don't have to haul all your friends around. you can ask THEM for rides, and save gas lol. & you'll never need to be the designated driver lol

I was having the same dilema when I bought mine, originally planned on the regular cab 4x4, realized that meant no cruise / auto windows / auto locks, drove an access 2x4, ended up with the access 4x4 4cylinder 5 speed. Best decision I ever made.

Although in your case I would say get the 4x4 regular if the 4x4 access is out of your price range. You'll probably regret not having 4x4 a lot more than not having the access cab.

I guess I'll chime in here...

I've sailed way past 19, but still single with no kids. I went with a 4x4 reg cab when I bought my truck and have not once regretted the decision.

The main purpose of my truck is to haul me and my gear into the woods, or to the water. One of the first things I did was place a cap on it, so the lack of dry, secured cab storage was never going to be an issue for me. If you don't plan on using a cap, the storage may be something to consider. If you do plan on putting some kind of cap on, then you don't need to worry about that at all.

As for the extra seating, from my research it's not like the seating in the access cab is actually useful for humans anyway, and your pup won't have a whole lot of room to get comfortable either. I haul my animal (also a lab) around in the bed and he loves it (be sure to get a bed mat or something though or else he/she will slide all over the place back there). I throw his bed and a bowl of water back there for long trips and he's got the run of the place. He's much happier on rides now than when I use to try and stuff him in the cab with me. That bench seat is just small enough to where he can't quite find that "sweet spot" to actually sleep.

The truck drives like a car on road, meaning you can get around just about any city streets normal cars can get around in, and with the same amount of ease. And then in the Woods it really shines. I've never had more fun with a vehicle than my Tacoma. And again, the cap turns the entire bed area into a giant trunk/dog run/sleeping quarters/truck bed and the utility of the truck goes through the roof. Add a roof rack and you can easily haul your boats. Perfect addition to any truck (unless of course you'll be constantly hauling tall gear, though I've got a pretty tall cap so I can easily haul around all but the tallest things).

I think for your situation a reg cab 4x4 is your best bet. When you can scrape together a little more money think about putting a cap on there and you'll have the perfect setup.

    Good luck with the decision.
