I've herd only bad things about body lifts? I have 3 inch suspension lift and want more. Was looking at 6" lifts but can save a but load just adding 3" body lift. Why are they bad?

I'm no pro, but I think the main thing is how they don't really help you out OR. I believe it messes real bad with your overall CG of the vehicle therefore making you more likely to roll over.

Plus, I'm just not a fan of the look. But like I said, I'm no pro on the matter so I'll let the other guys chime in.

the reason I don't care for them is alot of the hoosiers around my neck of the woods don't fill in the gap in the wheel wells and IMHO it just doesn't look good with the tunnel look under the bed.

i ran a 3 inch body lift on my ranger for 3 years with no issues, and i wheeled that truck fairly hard, it is an inexpensive way to fit larger tires, thus increasing your clearance, the only parts i saw bad about it is the bed brackets felt flimsy so i was afraid to put too much in the bed , as well as the steering extension they gave me had some slack in it so i had to fab another piece to make it not fit well .. with that being said i would invest in billies instead of a body lift, same amount of lift for almost the same price , and a performance increase, you can't do that with a ranger, most things for those trucks are $3k+

So there not all that horrible then? I agree on gap under bed I know they sell gaurds which I may invest in and as for rollover I was looking at wheel spacers to push wheels out a little bit and prevent rollover as much as possible. 200,000+ miles to that's alot. I'm at 135,000 now but I did alot of driving first two years I owned and bought it used with 70,000 but toyota is good for high milage vehicles thank god. What are billies also?

The issue with body lifts on the Tacoma, is if you off road, they can pull thru the sheet metal. They dont have as much of a "Foot print" on the body as when the body is mounted directly to the frame, useing OEM mounts, and the sheet metal is thin.

The biggest issue that I have seen it the crappy washers that the kits come with.

this was a while ago, but it was a Performance accessories BL. They may have improved since this.

The bolts pulled directly through the PA washers. there was a perfect Hex shaped hole in the washer. you can see where the body shifted and the puck is still attached to the frame

I think if it used the much thicker factory washers, it would have been fine

This was my buddies truck, he hit a patch of ice on I64 on Afton MT and hit the guard rail at 55 mph. That was a 2.5" Cornfed spacer and PA 3" body lift and 33s

mine on my ranger was a PA, seemed to have a bigger footprint after because i left the stock washers on top of the lift washers , also as per advice from someone on theragerstation i swapped the bolts for stronger ones , i think i payed 40.00 from some website

Now with the 5100s I couldn't combine with my three inch lift correct? And how hard are body lifts to install? Something I could do on my own? Or better to pay a shop?

There is also an increase in leverage on the body mounts caused by the lift, it makes the mounts more likely to fail.

Anytime you raise any part of the vehicle you raise the cg. A body lift may not cause as much of an affect on the cg because the drivetrain is not lifted as much.

I would think that the threat of body mounts shearing off would offset the value of not raising the cg by a little bit though.

I didnt want to get into the shear loading on the bolts, but you are correct.
