Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I’ve got a cold air intake but I haven’t seen a whole lot on it being worth it on our trucks. I’m interested though.

I should have clarified...I went to a cherry Carfax 1-owner 85K mile, 25 service record, 2006 Tundra Double Cab TRD 4x4...(I had a 2005 version of this exact truck before the Tacoma). I test drove 2019 Tundras and 4runners...both drove great, but I just couldn't pay that much for such aging platforms with (to me) cheap feeling interiors . I will say though, that if my 2017 Tacoma, had the 4Runners motor, I would have never sold it (still would have OVTuned it though! ). I'm also waiting to see what Toyota does with the Tundra and even the Tacoma in 2-3 years. There have to be some hybrids coming I would believe, and I actually think the 3.5 with a supplemental hybrid system to provide torque where it's needed on demand, could make this a decent drivetrain platform for a mid-size truck.

Interested to hear what this other truck is. I was impressed enough with your work on the Tacoma that I'll continue to follow what @OVTune does...This Tundra is my 8th Toyota Truck, but I doubt it will be my last...

IF it gets to the point of “production”, what kind of gains would you expect?

I have a Tundra TB sitting in my basement waiting for an appropriate version of the tune to come along.

 

Still working on ensuring no code issues with that upcoming patch. We will let hte MT guys know via MT thread when we are closer.

Unsure yet. Currently if you put the TB on without anything else, response might be marginally better than stock or even worse, as the throttle calibration in the ECU doesn't match.
As far as power, I don't really see it adding any.. because we haven't reached the limit of the stock throttle. Because the stock ECU (like TSB version especially) limits throttle angle.. versus previous ECU versions which do not. Which is something we are still sorting through code to convert back. Considering there is more "opening angle" to be had out of the stock one, there is still room to grow on the stock one.
Hopefully that makes sense.


Anyways we should have all orders out for people with pending tracking, and working on tickets!

@OVTune about a year and a half ago, I purchased a free flowing exhaust system, hoping the tune would one day take full advantage of it.

Any plans for this?

 

@OVTune Juat purchased my tune. I’m excited to see the all the improvements. Does the current tune allow to recalibrate the speedometer for different tire sizes?

 

Including the dump tunes off the head? That's the main restriction. We had to redesign ours completely, waiting on our manufacturer

Is this what I'm noticing through my ODB2 app where throttle isn't linear past ~40. Then it snaps up to about 55? (on what appears to be a scale of 65?)

 

Dump tunes? I’m confused.

I’m running the URD spec u. 2 cats removed. The pinched y pipe is now free flowing. Magnaflow muffler.

 

I think he's referring to the dump tubes coming off the heads.

 

He is referring to the dump that comes directly off the head itself. Similar to a header, except its just one pipe since all the exhaust runners converge inside the head. This is where the "headifold" terminology comes from.

From what you said, it appears you've replaced everything except for the area he is referring to, which also contains two more cats.

 

Yes I understand that. I assume he meant dump tubes not tunes.

 

My truck rumbles at idle in D, then there's that slight hesitation as the throttle is pushed. I wonder if the RPM is a little too low and adding fuel with the throttle push causes the hesitation.

Going to disconnect the battery and see if that helps.

 

Not necessary, I figured out why this is happening. There is a single idle target in the ECU that is unlike others. When up to temp the truck will use a value between 550 and 512.50 (which is a stupid value!). 1.05 did not modify this but an update will be.

Some trucks with our ignition rewrite do not like idling between this range.

Also, I still need to send you the logger, just been buried in tickets.




This same target is also the reason why some stock trucks shake at idle. (untuned)



just another "bug" .. or lack of attention in the stock tune.
