Puppy signs of dehydration?

Was the seizure caused by dehydration? My 10 week old pupp just had what looked like a seizure. we played all evening in 100 degree weather. A few hours later he had what looked like a seizure. His nose and gums are dry and he looks out of it. Im hopeing it's nothing bad. Thanks in advance.

 

If a dogs nose and gums are dry, yeah, their dehydrated. What I do when I take my dog out is bring extra water, and every now and then quit playing for a bit. If she is panting heavy and goes to burry into some bushes, I'll give her some water as well as put a little on her coat to cool her down. Just like a person, if your dog is really thirsty, only give a little water at a time. If you let them drink too much, they'll throw it up. It's kinda gross. You're probably good though so long as your pup is cooling down now and drinking some water.

Keep in mind that dogs don't sweat, so putting water on their furnwont do much. Additionally, they cool off in the opposite way that humans do, they cool off from the bottom up. The best thing to do when a dog is dehydrating (which your dog was indeed) is to give it COOL water (I usually throw a bottle in the freezer for a few hours when I take them hiking) and to put COOL water on their feet and stomach. If you're at home, you can dampen a towel or sheet and throw it in the freezer for a few minutes. Once it's nice and cold put it on the floor so your dog can lay his stomach on it and utilize the quickest way for him to cool down.

Careful with dehydration, it can get pretty dangerous in dogs, the key is to cool them down asap but gradually (don't throw him in ice water). It takes a good 20-30 minutes for his body to cool down.

Take him to the Vet anyway even if he is doing better now. It could be something else other than the heat that caused the dehydration and possible seizure.

But yes, sounds like your pup was dehydrated, checking the dogs gums is a good sign of their condition, also push on them and release to see how fast the blood comes back. Also, if you pinch some skin and it doesn't bounce back quickly the dog may be severely dehydrated.

It's important to keep a dog cool from the inside out, cold towels on the belly/chest help to cool the organs down. Ice cubes are great summer treats for dogs, always have plenty of water available and limit time in the heat. Puppies don't know when to settled down on their own.

For future knowledge, childrens Pedialyte can be used to help treat dehydration in dogs. It's good for if the dog gets the runs or is vomitting and needs more than water to stay hydrated.

 

Thanks guys. He had another episode last night, a total of 3 exept he pooped and peed wile doing this. I really hope it's just dehydration and that he will be ok. I'm taking him to the vet.

Yeah dogs release their heat through their chest (why they lay in water or on a cool floor) and also their pads on their feet. I think I heard this on TV a while back.

I had a golden retriever with epilepsy. He had seizures since he was a pup. At first we thought it was dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance as his first seizure was when we were houseboating and it was 105 degrees.

The key with his seizures was to get him immediately outside as soon as he was able to get up so he could relieve himself. Every once in a while he had an accident, but not too often. Going into the seizure would scare him (he could feel it coming on and would run over to one of us) but it's important to note that they are NOT aware when seizing, so while it looks bad, they feel no pain. It can be treated with medication in some cases, but it's not a death sentence ... our dog live to the ripe old age of 13.

 

Dry mucous membranes are a bad sign! Also seizures are typically accompanied with incontinence. Take your dog to the Vet for a serious check up ASAP!

 

What did the vet say? How's your pup doing?

 

x2 my dogs has siezures as well but his is from low sugar.

 

I had bloodwork done on him and he had a high white blood cell count. The vet said that the seizures could have been cause by the raw hide he was chewing on because they dip the in some chemical that can cause seizures in some dogs. He told us that it would be gone in a few days but did not give any meds. He is doing better but still had a seizure last night. It's the sadest thing I have ever had to deal with.

 

Poor little guy. Maybe once the chemicals are out of his system, the seizures will go away.

If he continues to have seizures in the next few days or a week take him back to a Vet and probably a different Vet at that.

While I'm against feeding rawhide anymore, I doubt there is a high incidence of seizures caused by rawhides or they would have had to stop selling them. The main concern against rawhides are the choking hazard and high risk of an obstruction.

OMG, that must be the most heart wrenching thing ever to have to see. I really hope your dog is doing alright.
