I think I was happier with a constant stable connection to the Internet more than the speed when I switched to cable

It is nice when your parents don’t kick you off the internet whenever they pick up the phone lol. Ah, what a childhood.

    Yeah.
Ha, yeah, and the "call waiting" beep messing things up. I never ran duals, but I did use the "extra" phone line for data to avoid that conflict with the phone. I remember running the wires to the office myself, and whatever jacknut installed the cable in the first place got EVERYTHING backwards. Primary line colors were secondary, and + was -. My kids don't realize it, but there was a time in their life where there was no constant internet connection . . .

How dangerous is opening port 80? What is a better way to allow access to a NAS from outside your network?
Using a NAS to store all of my photos, videos, and music seems like a good idea as well as using it to store business info, but I'm not sure if I really need to be able to access from outside my network but it's always nice to have options.

Who cares what they're rated for at sequential write and read, it's how they perform IRL which involves more random reads and writes. Trust me, I do image stitching which requires pulling thousands of images from a drive bit by bit. Also Optane is rated a lot more life span than 3D nand. So your cost on a drive like mine that is heavily used is easily covered by the life span difference and data intergrity. Optane 900p and 905p > Samsung 970 Pro. It's not even a contest. I run both drives, Samsung for my OS drive, Samsung for my games drive, and Optane for my scratch drive.

Optane isn't for gaming, honestly for gaming you won't notice the difference between a 500 mbps SATA SSD and a 3500 mbps NVMe SSD drive. All the high end drives are really only worth it dollar per performance for specific uses like scratch drives in media creation. Optane is good for long life and random large file reads and writes. High end 3D Nand is better for sequential or small sized write and read operations.

TL;DR Don't bite on just the top speed numbers, you'll never use a drive that way. Look for comparisons online of the drives in normal use. Optane is a totally different tech than 3D Nand.

Something also interesting to read into around Optane is it's ability to potentially become a stepping stone between conventional slow data storage and ram. Since Optane doesn't wear quickly and it's speed is mostly controller limited, it could be used as "slow ram." That excites the hell out of me. Imagine being able to leave your computer running all the time, and when you wake it up it's just perfectly exactly like you left it instantly because the system was saved in the "slow ram." Also for games, they could be preloaded into the "slow ram" cache whenever you boot your computer for instantaneous loading.

I use a non-default SSH port to access my files via SFTP from the outside world. 80 is typically used for http access.

There is a difference between the Optane drive you're talking about and a 900 series. The 900 series are full drives and behave like any other SSD so there are no weird issues. At least I've never had one and neither has any of the people I know who use one or more for content creation.

Also the new "slow ram" concept won't use the same implementation that the NVMe Optane drives are using. The Optane technology you describe simply uses the Optane memory as a cache drive for boot operations, like you said, where the newer implementation will instead use it as effectively as active ram. Should be neat if they can get it to work.

Hey Man...... Drum roll.............You asked. I answered. By the way. What assumptions are you making about my response? all I did was answer your question.

I'd rather buy another Glock than spend that much on an SSD.

and I would have $$ left over for Ammo

Given your reaction to high speed NVMe 3D nand SSDd I thought you might be interested in hearing about some other tech. In this thread we mostly BS about this sort of stuff. No need for the sarcasm. You never stated what you use your rig for, and I covered the two main uses (gaming and media creation) of HEDTs now a days which is where these high end drives are designed to end up.

Buy your glock lol. Honestly neither a NVMe drive or Optane drive is probably for you. They’re one of those parts that often gets shoved into consumer rigs that are really overkill for what most people need, of course assuming you are most people ;).

I understand why you bought your Optane. I'm an IT manager at the Tax firm I work for. No Towers only Laptops. The new dell laptops have a bus fast enough to handle this SSD as well as an 8th gen i5 that has twice the cores as the previous 7th gen.

It's a balance of being cost effective while getting the most bang for the buck.

Employees are completely satisfied. no complaints on SLOW. Since I got here everyones mechanical drive has been replaced with at least a samsung evo as a minimum.

I need to get an NVMe for my laptop. I only use it when I'm out of the office though so it's been on the bottom of my upgrade list.

I've heard of Linus talking about it but I've never used it myself. His forum might have some good comments on it.

Take a look at the dell 5770 intel laptop. It comes with a sata port and also a pci-e port so you can run an Pci-e SSD and either a 2tb mecanical drive if you need the space or another SSD.
