Heading to mammoth lakes from LA in two weeks.
Need to have some chain on hand in case, since i just have the sport 4x2.

    Never actually used chains before
So don’t know exactly what to look for.

    Please and thanks !

Call up your local pep boys. Give them your tire size and have them check to see if have ones that fit in stock. Depending on what size tire you have would determine price. I picked up 245/65/16 chains that ran me $110. Didn’t end up using when in mammoth 2 weeks ago. Truck handled the ice well enough.

Wal Mart sells them for about the cheapest I've seen.

In my experience buying chains, auto parts stores carry a very limited selection in southern CA if you have larger tires (larger than the average car/sedan). If you're headed to Mammoth maybe stop in Bishop and see what they offer there, probably have a much wider selection for bigger tires being that they're so much closer to the snow. Or shop for them online

I use the diamond chains. Im sure cables are fine for light use around town, but i prefer chains

yeah I've seen some good well rated chains. but what's the difference with doing chains vs. links with rollers? what is better suggested for a 4x2?

Amazon. Fast and cheap. I got a set for my corolla when I went to Yosemite during a snow storm and they worked well

I would just get them from the local Pep Boys or equivalent. You can save a few bucks on Amazon, but I try to give the automotive stores some business so they can loan me tools when I replace the ball joints, etc.

Unsolicited advice: do bit of reading on how to handle icy and snow-crusted roads. I was up at Manker Flat (Mt Baldy) today, which boasts steep switchbacks and significant elevation. It was icy. I witnessed five collisions. One Tacoma guy was, in his words, seeing how 4wd with crawl control “works” (no cables/chains) and was sliding toward a truck that had already stopped dead because it, in 4WD and no chains, slid into a third, parked truck. (I was in my Prius with cables on and had zero issues besides waiting.) A Mercedes with cables slipped backwards on an incline in front of me. AAA stopped going up at one point yesterday and told people to leave their cars stuck on the side of the road and come back later!

Needless to say, you want to know when to put cables or chains on and when to take them off. Practice at home first so it’s not your first time on the side of the road. Make sure you know how to tighten and tension your chains or cables. Bring a towel and sturdy but perishable gloves. Consider micro spikes for your boots so you don’t slip around when you step out. Putting cables or chains on too early is better than too late. Once they are on, stay at or below 20mph. Have some weight in the bed or, in a pinch, have some friends sit on the dropped tailgate. Be smooth and slow with your steering, and drive slower and with more caution. Put more space between you and the vehicle in front. Let people pass you if they are too close behind, or if they don’t have cables and it’s sketchy; only let them pass if it’s safe and you can get going again (I’ve been hit from behind.) There’s more, but that’s enough to get you thinking about it.

Definitely appreciate all this information. I’ve never driven in snow or icy roads and my truck is a 4x2 so i definitely need to get chains since it will be snowing up there
